Going around the headhunter after not making it past the resume screen

Currently at MBB and interested in making the jump to growth equity. I am a pre-MBA manager at MBB now with very good reviews. Didn't get past the headhunter resume screen but I have a strong profile for this fund (top target, 4.0 in computer science, lots of relevant tech experience at and pre-MBB). I'm thinking about networking with a partner (he is an alum of my school) at this fund to still try and get my foot in the door. Is this a waste of time for me to try? If not, how long is appropriate for me to ask to schedule the call for?

Give it a shot - downside is you're blackballed by the recruiter (who gives a shit); upside is you get the gig.

Most likely outcome, he refers you to someone more junior and they give you 15 - 20 minutes and that's it, because they use recruiters to hire.

Not saying it's not worth it, just saying don't get your hopes up.

Thanks both this is very helpful! The partner just replied (in less than an hour!) to schedule a call, any advice on if I should do 15 or 30 mins? It’s a really friendly place but not sure if 30 is too much to ask and maybe hard to fill that time

Can you give a rough breakdown of your tech career before mbb (swe/pm/etc?) and also how long you have been at mbb/at what level? Just interested, hoping for a similar career trajectory

Fuck the recruiter?

Reaching out to people you have shared backgrounds with on LinkedIn and talking to them man-to-man is how you build a connection and get ingrained into their memory. If they like you, they will likely fast track you to a first-round, after which of course it is up to you, or they may reach out if there's a vacant spot that needs off-cycle hiring.
