Growth Equity Interview - Question
In growth equity Associate interviews with senior investment professionals, is it better to pitch a company within the interviewer’s specialization (B2B marketplaces, infrastructure software, etc.) or better to pitch something outside their focus? I see pros and cons to both. It’s obviously better to understand where your interviewer spends most of their time & be able to have an intelligent conversation regarding that, but they also inevitably know more than you in that area so you might run the risk of seeming less knowledgeable. In an ideal world, you would have experience in the same industry they focus on (or deeply track it), but I’m specifically wondering about the instances when that is not the case.
It's a little bit like the question for college admissions officers, "Should I get all A's, or should I take APs?"
You should get all A's in APs.
Basically, pitch something in their strike zone, and be super knowledgeable about it. If you don't, the next guy will.
