How many times can you switch jobs w/o looking jumpy?

I started my career in a front office but less “prestigious” field. Think asset management / FoF. Hated it and jumped ship after about 10 months to work in VC. I’ve been at my current gig for about 5 months and am happy here.

Surprisingly I’ve started getting headhunter inbounds for VC associate roles. I’m very reluctant to leave this soon but would be a bump in title (I’m an analyst) and salary.

Any advice?

Switching jobs too frequently can raise red flags for both MBA programs and future employers. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know:

  1. General Rule of Thumb: Staying in a role for at least 2-3 years is typically seen as stable. If you’re leaving after just a year or less repeatedly, it can signal poor career management or a lack of commitment.

  2. Red Flags: Job hopping every year for better pay or titles can make your resume look unstable. Schools and firms may assume you’re either self-centered, have been asked to resign, or lack long-term focus. This can hurt your chances for future opportunities.

  3. Strong Narrative is Key: If you do decide to make another move, ensure you have a compelling story to explain your transitions. For example, highlight how each move aligns with your career goals or how the new role offers unique opportunities for growth.

  4. Current Situation: Since you’re happy in your current VC role and have only been there for 5 months, it might be wise to stay put for now. Jumping again so soon could harm your long-term career trajectory, even if the new role offers a title and salary bump.

Ultimately, think about the long-term implications of another quick move. Building a solid track record in your current role could outweigh the short-term benefits of a title or pay increase.
