If I email someone at a competitive firm, will it get back to my current firm?

I’m a little more than a year in as a principal. There was a mismatch between expected coverage and actual coverage and I’m not too happy about it.

If I email someone who I know is hiring at a peer/competitive firm, will it get back to my current firm? If that happened I would be toast

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some key points to consider:

  • Discretion is Key: When you're employed, you need to be far more targeted and discrete in your job search. Almost everyone in the industry knows each other, so it's crucial to handle your job hunting with tact.
  • Email Privacy: It's advisable to use your personal email address for such communications to maintain privacy and avoid any potential issues with your current employer.
  • Industry Norms: Job hunting isn't considered a crime, but it should be done with class and discretion to avoid any negative repercussions.

In summary, while reaching out to a competitive firm is not inherently wrong, it must be done carefully to ensure it doesn't get back to your current firm. Use your personal email and be discreet in your communications.
