If you had $1M to invest in just one seed startup today, what sector would you bet on?

Curious to hear everyone’s thoughts. if you had $1M sitting around and could only back one seed-stage company right now, which sector would you choose? AI, biotech, climate tech, fintech, consumer apps, something else entirely?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, if you had $1M to invest in a seed-stage startup, here are some sectors worth considering:

  1. AI (Artificial Intelligence): AI is experiencing explosive growth, with applications across industries like healthcare, finance, and logistics. Emerging AI startups with innovative solutions could offer significant upside.

  2. Biotech: Biotech remains a high-risk, high-reward sector. Advances in gene editing, personalized medicine, and drug discovery make it a compelling choice for long-term investors.

  3. Climate Tech: With increasing focus on sustainability and ESG, climate tech startups addressing renewable energy, carbon capture, or sustainable agriculture are gaining traction.

  4. Fintech: Challenger banks and P2P lending platforms are disrupting traditional financial services. As noted in WSO threads, challenger banks like Monzo and Atom have shown rapid growth, especially in markets with underserved banking needs.

  5. Consumer Apps: While consumer apps can be hit-or-miss, those targeting niche markets or solving specific pain points (e.g., health, wellness, or productivity) can scale quickly.

  6. Alternative Investments: Microbreweries or niche food trends (e.g., Indonesian food) have been highlighted as unique opportunities in WSO discussions, especially for those looking to invest in non-traditional sectors.

Ultimately, the best sector depends on your risk tolerance, expertise, and the startup's potential for product-market fit and scalability.

Sources: The Best Sector, Asset Class, or investment idea for 2017 (that WSO didn't know existed), Big Tech 2.0, Top Venture Capitals that hire juniors?, VC startup idea - PE or VC interest? Are these numbers viable?

Human brain interface. It's a long shot but I think it's one of the most exciting/terrifying long-term opportunities to take control of our own evolution and create a computation hivemind that propels/dooms the future of our race.

We’re getting pretty close…

  1. we’re pretty close to figuring out the robotics part

2. Translating brain waves to mechanical/electric signals is very much well studied

Just gotta get around to building at scale, safety measures, and find (more) appropriate use cases

Digital Immortality.  Follows a primordial human desire to be of some value to future generations of your family, including those not even born yet.  Total addressable market greater than the number of people alive today, because it’s a product/service category that can be used beyond our biological lifetimes.  New technologies making this even more cool to have for yourself or an older family member.

You must’ve seen Alien: Earth

I have not.  But I’ll add to the list of scifi references.  There’s a lot I haven’t seen including the Black Mirror episodes people keep telling me about.  Thank you.

Nice try A16Z.

Honestly for a check size that’s $1M from a single investor, which is pretty large in my neck of the woods? I got all sorts of odeas that seem crazy but are fairly close to becoming a reality -  real estate development in space (if you think about it you can implement this as a modular construction project for a large real estate project in a desert in the Middle East so it’s not that unrealistic), creating a mini sun and distributing at every home (fusion energy), mobile factories size of a truck that can make iPhones, etc…

That’s just for if I had blow away money to someone who can actually make an impactful dent that gets it closer to the development.

FWIW I think we’re getting pretty close to mobile factory size of a truck that can make iPhones so who knows. So mobile high precision factories
