Intern at small VC firm or UBS Wealth Mgt
Hey guys, I am a senior year undergrad student majoring in finance & accounting. I really want to get a job in finance. I am now having the opportunities to take a 4-month internship at either a small VC firm that focus on early stage, or the wealth management intern with UBS. I heard that the WM intern is waste of time, but it really build up your resume. For the VC, I am sure that I will have more opportunities to learn. The economy is bad nowadays, which one should I choose to land a better full time? Thank you so much!!!
I am still a student, but logically the VC internship would make more sense. Chances are, even if the VC firm is really small, most of their bankers have IB experience and connections. Plus, VC is more applicable to finance that PWM.
VC
VC - smaller firm means you might get a bigger role, which means better stories in interviews
VC because you're in your final year of study, and you will need all the networking you can get to secure a FT offer. PWM helps mostly if you're a freshman or sophomore, unless you want to break into private banking for FT.
WM with UBS. At least for landing first rounds, solid name on the resume matters more than some place no one heard about. Quality of your actual experience will matter later, after the name gets your foot in the door.
Thank you for all your reply above! I believe that networking is the greatest part that you may benefit most as an intern. I am not sure if a bigger company like UBS would provide me more opportunities for networking or not. But intern in the VC firm would definitely have chance to go out for conference and meet with lots of clients. Anyone has similar experience that can help me with this question? Thanks!
At a VC firm you'll meet a ton of entrepreneurs/VCs/Angels. Early stage VC firm has very little to do with investment bankers... ...as well as PWM.
.
I know that most of the students who got the Wealth Management Internship when they were in freshman or sophomore year. But I am already a senior, so does it really worth doing it for me? Many thanks!!
