Non-target student — will 10+ startup ideas + research projects + finance certs help?
I’m currently doing my undergrad at a non-target in India/UK(international bba prog). I know breaking into IB/PE from here is tough, so I’ve been building my profile on the side:
- Developed a portfolio of 10+ structured startup concepts with research-backed execution models.
- Done 6 deep research pieces (on markets, sectors, startup ecosystems, etc.)
- Took a bunch of free finance courses (valuation, corp fin, etc.)
I’m trying to figure out if this kind of stuff can actually help offset the non-target background, at least enough to get a foot in the door — assuming I’m also networking and applying smart.
Anyone here who made it from a similar place or has insight into how much this stuff actually matters would really appreciate your take.

Are you trying to get into VC or IB/PE?
You're better off researching existing companies, writing thoughts and publishing them on social media, substack, etc. vs. coming up with your own.
Alternatively, go out and execute one of those ideas.
Currently I'm trying to get into IB then maybe 5-6 in exit to PE.
