Partnering with a VC firm

I’m from a developing market that is expected to grow significantly in the future but is right now under-penetrated in terms of institutional capital. I am well-connected in my country, very well-educated and have good professional background. I’m speaking with some foriegn VC firms and exploring whether they want to partner with me so I can introduce them to vc investments in my country. I don’t really know how should the partnership work as I haven’t done it but my hunch tells me it could be lucrative. Anyone whose done this before? Can you tell me how should this partnership should be structured? My goal would be to join this VC firm as an employee though and focus on the region.

What’s your level of seniority and what work experience do you have in the country? If you can point to an investment track record there, I’m sure you could find a firm willing to take you on. If you’re more junior (I notice you’re a “Prospect” in WSO), you may not actually be connected / established enough to build a new geography around, unless your dad is Jack Ma or something

Thanks, this is to fully conceal myself. I have about 6 years of work exp in major world markets in high finance as well as stint at a high-growth foreign-VC funded tech start up domiciled in my country where I was in a leadership role. I have no investment track record of mine. But have political and business connections in my country partially owning to my parents and partially to the most elite boarding school I attended in my country. Sorry, not trying to come as pompous but giving u a full picture. How should I approach this situation?

Makes sense. My instinct is this may be a challenging jump to make as a Senior Associate / VP level person with no investing experience. Mitigating factors would be:

  • The firm is already active in a nearby region and you want a smaller market (e.g. they're in China and you'd do Singapore). If you're trying to pitch a NA-only firm that you're the guy to lead China for them, that's tougher

  • How well-known your startup is -- if it's the best one the region has ever produced and had a great exit, you'll probably find it easier to come in at a more senior role and gain traction with local entrepreneurs

  • If there are any partners at the firm who would sponsor you / take you under their wing. Going off Bullet 1, maybe you could convince the guy who currently does China to mentor you for a couple years then you take over.

Good luck man!
