VC Associate Recruitng 2013

Hey all,

Was looking for a little insight into VC recruiting. Do VCs typically recruit a year in advance for pre-MBA Associates like PE firms do or is it usually different depending on firm and on a need basis? Does anybody know if VCs have already started recruiting for their 2014 class or when that might start?
Was hoping to get insights specific to the Boston VC area as that is where I am, but higher level would be great as well.

Also, for many of you familiar with the process, is it usually helpful for someone looking to go from IB Tech Analyst to VC Associate (deal sourcing Associate is prob the best bet) to get a headhunter for this, or is that not worth it. Otherwise, what is the best way to get a shot at these positions - cold emailing, etc. ?

Thanks for any help
