VC “idea dinners” - Bay Area

I am young (early 20s) on the investment team at a late-stage VC firm and am trying to meet other VCs.

I know deal flow can be competitive but was wondering if anybody would be interested in small curated dinners where we share interesting companies that we’ve come across that weren’t a fit for our firm (stage, sector etc) or discuss secular trends we believe in. Maybe on a monthly basis.

If this sounds interesting to you and youre in the Bay Area pls comment or PM.

Organizing "idea dinners" is a fantastic initiative, especially in the Bay Area, where networking and collaboration are key in the venture capital world. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some tips and insights to make this idea successful:

  1. Purpose and Value Proposition:
Clearly define the purpose of these dinners. Whether it's sharing deal flow, discussing trends, or building relationships, ensure attendees see the value in participating. Highlight the exclusivity and the potential for mutual benefit.

  2. Curated Guest List:
Invite a mix of professionals from different VC firms, ensuring diversity in expertise (stage, sector, etc.). This will foster richer discussions and broader perspectives. Start with people you’ve already connected with and expand through referrals.

  3. Structure the Event:

    • Begin with introductions to set the tone.
    • Allocate time for each participant to share one or two companies or trends they’re excited about.
    • Encourage open discussions but keep it structured to avoid tangents.
  4. Confidentiality and Trust:
Since deal flow can be competitive, establish ground rules for confidentiality. This will encourage openness and build trust among participants.

  5. Venue and Atmosphere:
Choose a relaxed yet professional setting, such as a private dining room or a quiet restaurant. The goal is to create an environment conducive to meaningful conversations.

  6. Frequency and Follow-Up:
Monthly dinners, as you suggested, are a great cadence. After each dinner, follow up with attendees to gather feedback and maintain engagement.

  7. Leverage Social Media and Forums:
Platforms like WSO, LinkedIn, or even Twitter can help you find like-minded individuals. Your post here is a great start—encourage interested parties to PM you for details.

By fostering collaboration rather than competition, these dinners could become a valuable tradition in the Bay Area VC community. Good luck, and remember—great ideas often start over a shared meal!

Great, see you all at Blue Bottle near South Park at 2pm every 3rd Tuesday. Look for the group of guys wearing vests!

Jk, I used to have one of these with a couple friends. It ends up being better having a few friends in the industry that you trust get together to share intel vs. a large format dinner. Ends up being a lot of noise and people talking up their books.

I’ll try to make the first meeting.  Thank you.

Where were you?
