If you want to do a lot of modeling go into banking
+1 Cut your modeling teeth in banking then make the leap later. You'll have tons more experience on a wider range of deals in different industries. Then you can pick the right VC in a sector you really enjoy.
Thanks for the input, AcctNerd. I am just wondering if you are familiar with the decision making in a VC firm, like whether to invest in a company? I feel like it doesn't require a lot of financial modeling but instead people put a lot of weight on business model. Is the financial modeling skill necessary in VC world?
Growth equity shops are strict about finance experience, but the modeling is nowhere near as detailed or intense as banking and PE. Early stage shops don't do any modeling
Thanks for your input VCassociate. That's what I feel right now in the incubator. It really didn't do any modeling. So what's the typical path to the decision maker in the top VC shops? I know IB > VC might be one. Is it possible to jump from big tech company like google or facebook to a top VC? Or maybe jump from a startup to a VC?
