It really depends, I think Rx work in banking is more inherently interesting and less cookie cutter than M&A but I think the typical consensus is that M&A leads to broader exits. Most of those firms have generalist programs though so if you land an internship you can get exposure to all.
From a pure technical aspect yeah Rx will be better than M&A. However in M&A you get way more exposure into how actual PE firms operate and think about acquisitions.
Very wrong an RX background can bring a lot of value in PE.
There are so many deep value or turn around funds that look at deals where an cap stack knowledge and experience modeling less vanilla situations can be very useful. Even in vanilla growth oriented buyout s rx background will serve you just fine.

If you want to do PE do M&A if you want to do distress / turnaround / SS then do Rx…. Really no point in going into Rx just to leave to buyout PE.

Yeah, at firms like Apollo an Rx analyst would be more preferred. But not every firm does deep value / turnaround.
