Is This a Good Gig? Investment Management for Wealth Management

Hi All,

One of my offers is doing portfolio analysis/trading for a small RIA/wealth management company. I have an awesome relationship with the CIO and get to have work-life balance.

My only concern is: will this role pigeonhole my options? Even if I get a CFA after 3 years? What are your thoughts.

Once you go into WM it's almost impossible to get out. I learned this the hard way.

My CFA charter is what got me out, but don't expect to get it in three years. Only about 20% of people who start ever get it, and I believe that the average time is 5 years. (It's meaningful for a reason)

My recommendation is that if you have other options within finance, and don't want to do WM as a career, you consider them instead.

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.

What job were you doing in WM? Was it financial planning?

Do you feel like exit opps. would still be limited if im doing investment-related work (rather than financial planning)?
