2014 Major League Baseball Opening Day
Let's have a little fun on Opening Day (for most teams). Clean slate for everyone right now.
Use this format and fill in the blanks:
Team: __________
Why they could win the WS this year: _______________
----
I'll start:
Team: Atlanta Braves
Why they could win the WS this year: With 2 of our best pitchers out for the season we need to have big offensive numbers to help take the pressure off of the depleted pitching staff. If this happens we could win it all.
Team: Milwaukee Brewers Why they could win the WS this year: most other teams die in a series of accidents
Looks like y'all will be starting off with the W over my Braves. BJ is swinging at pitches in the dirt.
Cardinals
Amazing young pitching, upgraded lineup from last years WS team. Not biased at all.....
Can you guys handle a motivated Yankees in the WS??
Although I want the Phillies... aka the Philadelphia Nursing Home Residents..
My pick: Yankees Why: Tanaka/Ellsbury/McCann additions send DJ out on top
As much as I hate it. You might be right.
Right there with you, I'm an NL East guy too. Do you think Uggla's arms got bigger this offseason? Jeez
Team: Mets
Why they could win the WS this year: Lol
Rangers
I think it's really just a race between them and Oakland to see who can stay the healthiest, not looking good for either team yet.
Team: Orioles
Why the will win the WS: Arguably best offense in the AL and stellar defense Why they won't: AL East
Cardinals.
Our pitching is so stacked its ridiculous. We also got Peter Boujors for a steal. Lineup is '13 WS 2.0.
Cubs
Just because it would be amazing.........
fuckin bravos, don't worry they'll figure out a way to screw themselves toward the end
So true.
How about those Phillies bats yesterday!?
Team: Devil Rays Why: Longo and Myers hit 30 HR's each if healthy and Friedman goes all in for a DH at the deadline
Red Sox.
Because this is our FUCKING city!
Team: Tigers
Why: Healthy Cabby, Verlander is still awesome and so is Scherzer (sp?) as well as no Papa Grande to ruin any lead they have. No Prince, but we have Kinsler instead. A solid rest of the line up as well.
You have any thoughts on the giant contract?
If it were any sport other than baseball it would be a terrible terrible idea. Seeing as how it is baseball and the chance of reinjury, especially as a 1st baseman now, is low, I think it will pan out to be a good deal overall.
It's almost like one of the reasons why Facebook bought WhatsApp. Would you rather pay a higher price for Cabby now, or end up playing against him in a couple years?
There was a huge stats analysis on him and the price of wins vs. how many many wins he is expected to generate for the rest of his career and on an average case he is worth the price of the contract. Anything better than average and the Tigers make out on the deal.
Grew up in Atlanta following the Braves in their hey day in the 90's. Braves will not win WS because teams from the state of Georgia don't win championships, that's just the way it is.
It has been a rough stretch for teams from GA.
Giants.
Because the baseball gods trolled us all in 2010 and 2012, it can happen again.
Natty Daddy's.
Stras, Gio, Zimmerman. Storen, Clippard, Soriano out of the pen. It's all about pitching, and when it's not it's all about Bryce Harper. 1-0.
Athletics
Yoenis!!! Also because Michael Lewis has a new book out which should give them some rungood.
Dodgers
Kershaw, Greinke, and Ryu...throw in the Brian Wilson addition along with Kemp and that guy named Puig.
Side note: The Seattle Mariners will be making a run this year!
Is Puig legit or just another Tebow soaking up airtime because ESPN needs someone to talk about 24-7?
Pirates.
Because: A stronger bullpen. And of course - Cutch.
I do love Cutch. Almost makes me wish I were a Pirates fan.
Haha I hear ya...he's a real gem for the media, but hopefully he can stay focused on the game. I believe Puig will be solid player in the bigs, but I don't yet see the "spectacular" talent that the Dodgers organization did when they gave him the $42M deal.
Royals
Moustakas needs to actually show up. Butler needs to hit like 2012, not 2013. Alex Gordon...a solid player, but what a disappointment. He was supposed to be George Brett. All the young hitting pieces are there. Perez, Hosmer, Cain, etc... Fingers crossed on Shields and Guthrie. Maybe Ventura is for real. Pitching is the key.
Projection: More disappointment
I haven't been able to figure out if the Royals Front Office has a plan or is just winging it every year.
Red Sox.
Some more smart veteran pickups (Grady Sizemore), improved bullpen, deep starting 5 (all #2 or #3 pitchers in most rotations), BOGAERTS has arrived, middlebrooks wont blow as much this year, papi & napoli continue to defy age, Carp underrated.
Also, why not a repeat? been a while, right?
Houston Astros - Within 5 Years
They have the best young players in the league coming up and joining the squad within 2-3 years.
Return of the Killa B's...
I'd just like to point out in my defense that in the "but-for" world where the A's kept Cespedes, they would surely be winning the World Series.
@"happypantsmcgee" @"Scott Irish" @"Stryfe" @"Ipso facto" you are all still alive, wanted to bump this thread in lieu of starting a new one for the postseason.
for anyone who's followed me, I'm a die hard O's fan, and was ecstatic to find Natty Boh on the shelf at my local grocer (remember, I'm no longer in the mid atlantic), let's go birds!
I stand by my words because there's no logical explanation. The NLCS is totally trolling the rest of the NL this year.
I would tell you I'm rooting for the AL this year (I love Camden Yards btw), but I'm guessing that in a few years, the Giants will regress to a perennial 4th place team so I have to get it while the gitting is good.
