3.4 GPA at Stern, what can I do?

So I am junior at Stern with a 3.4 GPA, I am interested in IBD but I've read from these boards that a 3.7 is standard at the BB's and even boutiques. Recruiting season is coming up in the Spring semester, and I am wondering whether I should shoot for IBD or try and get an internship in another division that's less competitive, because summer after junior year is so critical, I just want to get some experience in the financial services industry. What divisions would you recommend that are less competitive yet perhaps position myself in a way to make a switch to IBD when I graduate or in the future?

3.4 is fine. It really is. I've had friend with 3.2 and 3.3 at columbia get internships and full times. Just go to all the recruiting events, get business cards, schedule calls with the guys you get cards from. That'll put you on their radar. Ask them if there's other people in their group you can talk to. Try to visit them if possible and meet the team. Send thank you notes etc. etc. Don't worry so much about the GPA.

I've read that IB only takes the "smartest, most intelligent people in the world". So based on that, you're sh!t out of luck.

You forgot to include people with the right last name, people with friends who have the right last name, people who went to the right kindergarden, etc.

Nothing personal but I think 3.4 is on the lower side, especially at a school like Stern where everyone is gunning for the same jobs. But then again, I'm just a freshmen... Good luck to you and I wish you the best.

Network. Go to every single information session on-campus. Make contacts, join any listservs you can and get the emails. Go to any networking sessions you find out about, speak with people, play the game. At this point it sounds like you're worried by your GPA and wondering how it will impact your recruiting in Jan/Feb. Did you put in the work in the fall?

I am permanently behind on PMs, it's not personal.

The people talking about you being in the top 1/3rd of your class really are trying to make themselves feel good. Its investment banking, not the rhodes scholarship. Sometimes the stuff I read here is laughable.

There are plenty of people with GPAs lower than yours (including me) who obtained summer and full time offers. A resume is a combination of three factors: academics, work experience, and extra curriculars. Make sure the other two areas look good and network so the resume gets to the right eyes. You will be fine.

dont let these people discourage you. You want it, you take it. I have a 3.4 Econ at Cal, Im going to superday next week for a BB S&T. Make sure your resume looks good other than gpa. if you have a good SAT score, put that on your resume too. Once you get to interview stage, gpa really does not matter anymore! stick to it champ, you will get it.

As long as you do a ton of networking, you'll be fine. I second the part about the info sessions- go to every single one, get business cards, schedule calls with everyone, and ask for more contact info at the end. Just keep doing this. It seems that when schools have resume drop for BBs, kids take it for granted and don't network a lot, so take advantage.

Be happy you even have info sessions- I had to travel 20 minutes 2-3x a week and sneek into info sessions because my school didn't have any. Got denied/kicked out of a couple which was great too. Start right away though, and hopefully you have decent work experience.
