A 4.0 signals perfectionist in a sense. It’s a great signal to send if you come across as a well-adjusted human being, because literally nobody can have a GPA that’s higher than yours.
You have to keep in mind though, GPA is just one of many “checklist” items that gets you an interview. Your 3.7 is competitive enough to land any job, but it definitely doesn’t stand out like a 4.0 will.
Other factors to consider: major (a 4.0 in computer science =/= a 4.0 in English), interests you have in common with interviewers (this goes a long way - if you seem weird then you won’t get hired no matter how good your grades are), networking in general, internship experience, etc.
GPA counts even more for PE/HF because those jobs are even more competitive to get than IB.
TLDR: yeah it’s WAY different to have a 4.0 vs a 3.7, but you’re still competitive with a 3.7+. However, GPA is a “checklist” item that helps you land an interview but won’t land you the job.
I generally agree with your response, especially about all the factors to consider. I will say, as someone who has been in hiring roles across the buyside, the 3.7 to 4.0 is a huge difference in effort, but not a real difference in how it is viewed by potential employers. Employers are looking to make sure you are “bright” and can handle the work, the GPA gets you in the door, after that it is essentially forgotten.
Think about the amount of time + effort required to go from a 3.7 to 4.0. I'd say it's much more valuable to spend that time networking, running mock interviews, etc.
Probably would rather a chill dude with a 3.7 vs a narc with a 4.0
No offense but if you have a 4.0 at an Ivy you must have no life

I don't count freshmen with one semester of Gender Studies under their belt
nah bro it really isn't that hard here if you optimize it, can be a beat social science/humanities (psychology, history type) major who takes the easiest class in their major & easy ones outside of it and get a 4.0 with only a moderate workload
Just curious since I didn't go to an Ivy. How hard are the classes if you take one of the majors that you mentioned?
People here act as if the only way to get a 4.0 is to do nothing else but study. Here's a hypothetical, maybe some people can get a 4.0 in the same time you get a 3.7 because they're smart.
Everything matters and everything can help- two candidates, ceteris paribus, with one having a 3.7 and another having a 4.0 the 4.0 is clearly going to make a difference, but if you need to sacrifice other aspects of your application (extracurriculars, networking) to achieve a marginally higher gpa than it's probably not worth it.
As someone who reviewed hundreds of resumes at a BB, I never really differentiated between a 3.7 and a 4.0. It was more a review to check the box on a decent enough GPA, but I was really more interested in the non-GPA components of what the student had done outside of school.
I mean what is the major and what else does the person do? GPA is only one part of the picture and a 3.7 is still a good GPA.
I'll give you the honest answer.
3.7, 3.8 and 3.9 are practically the same. It doesn't affect your chances of interviews and once you're in the interview, those 3 GPA's don't make a difference in your chances.
The difference between a 3.7, 3.8 or a 3.9 vs a 4.0 is pretty simply actually. It's just the sticker value of showing "perfection" with a 4.0. However, for the purposes of IB, that doesn't really matter. The acceptance pool is so wide that it's not necessary.
Anyone who tells you "kids with 4.0's prolly have no social life and suck, would rather work with a 3.7 kid" did not have 4.0's and actually are pretty fucking insecure for thinking like that lol
There is a difference between 3.7 and 4.0 depending on what you want to do. Also depends on major and degrees. If you want to do mega fund PE and stuff like that out of undergrad, I'd shoot for 3.85 and above, and have strong internships, etc. This is impacted by your major and degrees also. It also depends on what exact school u went to. 3.7 is a strong GPA and you will have lots of great opportunities. Wouldn't expect interviews at Silverlake, Bx, and top buyside shops, but could get some with right internships, networking, etc.
For what it’s worth, I know a a guy doing an econ phd at one of Harvard/MIT/Stanford/Uchicago/Berkeley (ie the top 5) with a 3.69 ugrad gpa. He was a Columbia/Princeton ugrad though.
