Moving to a city where I don't know anyone. Any advice on how to meet people?

I am moving from the east coast to the west coast for work, and I don't know anyone. For anyone who has been in this situation, how was the transition? Any advice on how to meet people that aren't your coworkers? How long did it take to feel 'at home'? I'd appreciate any other advice as well. Thanks for the help.

Meeting friends with through hobbies should work well, eg car meets, or bowling or golfing or whatever. you find events on forums or reddit, then attend them and introduce yourself to people you like.

meetup

I met quite a few people through their app and meetups. post covid will be this summer or fall, so they may restart these things

In rare cases, you might become friends with few colleagues. Other places to make friends are the gym, bars, social clubs or professional organizations.

also: dating apps. there are many people you may meet through there without dating them. become their friend instead and get introduced to others.

the fastest way to meet many people is having roommates. if you share living spaces you'll meet many friends of others. Also good: WeWork.

If you're into sports, I'd recommend rec leagues - any major city should have a million of them. There's varying levels from kickball where it's an excuse to go to the bar afterwards to something more competitive, so there's a lot to pick from and find something you would have fun with.

And if that's not your thing, a google search for 'events in X city' should bring up a calendar for meetups and events coming up around food, art, music, etc.

When I moved, one thing I realized is that while you have to really make an effort to meet new people, people are also much more willing than you would initially think to bring you into their friend group. Also, all you really need is one or two people, and you'll get a lot of intros to their friends and circles that really open things up
