Based on the most helpful WSO content, buy-side investor relations (IR) roles are typically filled through a mix of headhunters (recruiters) and direct postings by firms. However, networking plays a significant role in landing these positions, as they can often be opportunistic hires.

Key Insights:

  1. Recruiters/Headhunters:

    • Headhunters are a common channel for buy-side IR roles, especially for larger firms or specialized positions.
    • While specific recruiter names aren't mentioned in the context, it's advisable to focus on those who specialize in private equity, asset management, or buy-side placements.
  2. Direct Postings:

    • Firms may post these roles on their career websites or platforms like LinkedIn. Setting up job alerts with keywords such as "Investor Relations" or "IR Associate" can help you stay updated.
  3. Networking:

    • Networking is crucial for IR roles. Reaching out to alumni, former colleagues, or professionals in the field can uncover opportunities that aren't publicly advertised.
    • Building relationships with equity salespeople or leveraging your existing network can also lead to referrals or insights into unposted roles.
  4. Tips for Success:

    • Be proactive in reaching out to hiring teams directly if you identify a role of interest.
    • Use LinkedIn and other professional platforms to connect with individuals in the IR space.

For the strongest recruiters, focus on those with a track record in private equity or buy-side placements, as they are likely to have connections to IR opportunities.

I've had decent roles come my way with odyssey search and mission staffing... think you need to actually network with the recruiters a bit for that route. many instances in which I shared a resume and they'll send me something that could be attractive 6 months later

Know of ex-colleagues who have applied directly on the website and gotten MF offers too, it all depends
