Acceptable cold email to hedge fund?

Mr. xxxxx

My name is xxxxxx and I’m currently in my sophomore year at xxxxxxx studying finance and investments. I am emailing you to inquire about a possible unpaid internship opportunity with your firm. This school year I have gained access to take Junior level accounting and finance classes through the business scholars program that has given me exposure to some basic financial and accounting principles such as valuation methods, financial statement analysis, and putting together cash flows. I have also been managing a small 2.5k portfolio of my own for the past year. I have learned a ton through this process, in particularly learning to be patient when entering a position.

Please let me know if we can set up an informational interview sometime in the upcoming weeks. I will attach my resume for your consideration.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

xxxxxxx

I think you'd be better off trying to talk about something, other than just saying some bs about your classes and shoving your resume down his inbox. Maybe ask him about state of the markets or something? You want a conversation, don't make it sound like you are begging for something. I wouldn't flat out ask for an internship right away either, you've never even spoken to this person.

I personally don't think there's any problems with directly asking for a job in an email as a sophomore-- assuming you're just emailing a whole bunch of no-name hedge funds, it's not really feasible to try to build a relationship with the folks at all of them. I did pretty much the exact same thing when I was a sophomore, and that's how I got my first summer internship, at a very small boutique investment bank.

I don't think there's much you can improve with your email, because at the end of the day, a cold email can only do so much. However, you'll have to be realistic with your odds. If you send this email to 100 firms, expect maybe 3-4 to get back to you, tops. And then just work from there.

You got a whole lot of nonsense going on in that e-mail. No one is going to care that you're a sophomore taking junior level classes, and more importantly no one is going to have time to read all of that.

You should trim it down and just send the following.

Please let me know if you have time to set up a quick 15 minute chat sometime this week or next to discuss more about your firm and my experience to-date. I have also attached my resume for context.

Best, OP
