Advice: Fixed Income Research Intern -> IB Internship
Hello friends,
I'm currently a fixed income research intern with MM bank, focusing on high-yield corporate issuers.
What advice would you give to me to leverage my FI research internship experience to get an IB internship in summer 2012?
Just to add on, from the information and networking I've done thus far, I've gotten the idea that DCM is the most relevant IB function to FI research. Is this opinion valid?
Thanks in advance!
Internship in Fixed-Income Trading? Valuable for Investment Banking? (Originally Posted: 04/02/2015)
I am a freshman at a target school aspiring for a career in Investment Banking. I was fortunate to receive a finance-related internship offer this summer, after a lot of effort, and I'm excited to get started. The company I'm working for is very small and operates out of Chicago. I'll be in an office with 2 employees, who basically run Bloomberg terminals and trade bonds and other fixed-income assets very rapidly. It's a little beyond my scope of understanding, but I'm a motivated learner.
My question is, what industry is this company working in? Is it considered "Sales and Trading"? The 2 guys I'm working with are "rates traders" but I don't know what that means. On their corporate website they list services such as Investment banking, sales and trading, and investment management. I am trying to get a better understanding of the industry before I begin my internship.
Furthermore, what relevance will this internship have when I pursue an actual I-Banking job? I want to build skills that will be valuable in interviews, and I figure experience with Bloomberg and Trading is a plus. But is a trading/brokerage internship viewed as a valuable work experience when considering job candidates?
