adviced needed for an aspiring korean female
hello everyone, i'm currently a junior at a target ivy. i'm not a finance major, and my gpa is around 3.2-3.3-ish. i was planning to go law school, but recently changed my mind to financial services. im intersted in pwm or ib. i've been talking to many alums in both fields, and i was told that for women, both fields are difficult. but overall, pwm is easier for women bc of less hours(a huge bonus when i have children), however, it comes with less pay. i was also told that i don't really have a chance since my grades aren't stellar and i lack experiences in financial internships.
with that said, i wanted to ask you guys for an advice. what are my options at this point? i realize that i only have about 2 semesters left before i apply for a full time. couple of my friends suggested that i purposely graduate a year later so that i can bring my gpa in 4 semesters instead of 2, and have two more summers to apply for jobs. however, i'm trying to avoid that option as much as possible. im applying to internships right now and trying to network with alums as much as i can. i realize that i need to bring my gpa up to to at least 3.5 to get an interview. also, if there are any minorities/women on this site, can you describe your experiences at your company/ib so far?
thanks everyone for helping me out with this :)
I think the advice you received was coming from a much older perspective. Finance is a difficult industry for women if they have children or other serious commitments. My guess is that you don't and probably won't for the next 5 years. In that case, there's nothing stopping you from trying out finance if you get the opportunity.
I've never had any issues as a woman in my finance internships (IB included). I've worked on trading floors composed of about 90% men and been treated the same as any other intern. If you are smart and work hard, nobody cares about gender.
Hope this helps!
First and foremost, you need to get your GPA up. Your GPA is not high enough to get you selected for interviews although which ivy you attend can affect the whole GPA issue.
So basically having a 3.3 GPA eliminates you from getting any interviews at all? (from a non-ivy target) Do they consider work experience and other commitments, or do you just get cut off because of your GPA?
i have a friend who's an engineering double major at a non-ivy target and he got interviews with a 3.0 or 3.1. his resume consisted of mostly consulting experience because he wanted to do consulting prior to switching over to banking. i wouldn't say it's impossible.
I got a fulltime offer as a 3.4 Humanities major, so anything is possible. If you get a finance internship this summer, go for it. If you can't get a summer, don't be dicouraged and bust your balls until AND through recruiting season so that when you do get interviews the recruiters will be impressed by how much you managed to learn. (Also, they won't ask super hard finance questions to Humanities majors...)
Of course, there are exceptions. I am not saying that it's impossible and has never happened before. However, you will face an uphill battle with a low GPA.
