Alternatives to chilling alone in your hotel room

I work for a company that does 95% of the work at our own offices and visits the client at the start and end of the project (mostly), or for important update meetings over the course of the project.

However even when i do visit the client, whether it's abroad (I'm from London) or in the UK, I find myself getting very bored in the evening. I do all the exploring I can on my own but do get bored out of my mind just sitting in your hotel room alone

I know I'm lucky in that this is not a weekly story for me, and I'm grateful for the travel opps but I do miss the human connection

what do you guys do to pass the time without chilling alone in your hotel room? any useful websites/apps you use like meetup for example?

thanks that's helpful. yup can't do any of these in the current situation. hopefully won't be too many months before we can get back to normality

do you travel often to different cities or mostly the same city?

I have worked and lived in nine countries and have traveled to about 49-51 so far (depending on whether some nations are a "country" or not).

Typically I have up to 90% travel and currently it is 0%. Doing quarantine in the UK atm.

I think it all comes down to your personality and how open/entertaining/interesting you are. People out there are also in the same situation as you, and a TV or youtube videos will never be as interesting as another human being.

My typical destinations are across the US, Europe, some Asian (going forward probably less so), but also Scandinavia, Russia, Switzerland, etc

Let's see how this all will change going forward.

Most Helpful

1) WFH or generally remote work is working out great so far, our clients, syndicate, and others all have technology that enables seamless work. We are now building programs where a larger quantity of employees will work from home in the future. Only the essential staff will come back in 2020.

2) Less travel With gov restrictions and physical distancing in place, there will simply be less or no international travel for us in 2020. we MIGHT start traveling again in 2021. Yes, this means less deal flow, but the wider economic effects are much larger (no events, no airlines, no restaurants used, ..)

3) New business model, digital only We have a laundry list of items we can now go through, one item on this list was to work through "digital" means only. last year someone came up with a concept where teams could only work on deals that were sourced, handled and executed with digital means. And guess what... we tested that.. and it was fine. So maybe this is something that could work.

Strike up a conversation with someone in the lobby and ask if they want to take a walk with you around the park (i.e. make some plans together).

Gumball3000:
forgot to mention: WeWork is still operating across the globe. If you/your company is willing to pay up and you don't mind the infection risk... this is a very social place with fairly young/attractive people.

Now, how long they will survive this entire scenario is a different question.

that's a good point actually for the future. luckily i'm not holed up in a hotel room alone now, more of a general point for work travel!

Not going to get into the details, but I was travelling to an eastern European country once and I was dropped off about a mile from my hotel. I had a carryon and two big bags with me; I had to carry both bags on pebblestone streets. By the time I reached the hotel muscles (mostly my traps) were sore from the long flight and farmer walking the bags (the wheels were broken.) So I decided to do something about it...
