Amherst College vs. Fordham Gabelli School of Business

Hi, I was accepted to both Amherst college and Fordham's Gabelli School of Business. Fordham gave me full tuition while Amherst gave me very little. I was wondering if going to Amherst is worth the financial burden?

IMO, it would probably be worth it. At the end of the day, its you who would be taking out loans (if necessary), but the opportunities coming from Amherst right out of the gate would most likely be better.

I'd lean towards Amherst.

A note to all - if you need more money, feel free to sit down with financial aid before hand. When I went to UG I wanted more money and made an appointment with the head of finances. Made my case and told him I needed more money to make things work. They gave me an additional 6k per year grant. Everything in life is negotiable.

good job. keep it up

Academically- Amherst over Fordham 100% Every other aspect- Fordham over Amherst -If you are not on a sports team, Amherst will likely be a terrible 4 years in Western MA.. Even if you are on a sports team, your experience will only be marginally better. Social life is close to non-existent; the school has recently demolished the dorms where all parties occurred, permanently banned frats, and refuses to let people live off campus or get off the meal plan. It's a tough call between Amherst/Fordham. Amherst will 100% set you up better for a career in finance with a powerful network, but you should think about whether a mediocre college experience is worth a xx% better shot of breaking into IB. Have you gotten into any other schools?

Amherst is essentially the equivalent to an Ivy league school and a good Ivy at that. People might give me a hard time for saying this but I think Williams/Amherst is on the same level as the Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, Yale, etcs of the world academically and in terms of job placement(based on the class size)

The name won't be as widely known, but in the right circles, everyone will know about them. Plus they have great representation across wall street, consulting, tech, real estate, you name it.

I'd fight for more money at Amherst and even if they don't give it to you, paying for Amherst even over a free Fordham is worth it to me. It would be different if we were talking free NYU vs Amherst, but Amherst and Fordham aren't even on the same level.

It's pretty clear you have a hard-on for Amherst since I'm guessing you're an alum. Completely understandable and will give you the benefit of the doubt since you probably graduated a while ago (when there were still remnants of fun to be had) but Amherst today is a much different place, where much of the student body is unhappy and the social life is severely lacking.

Nope didn't go to Amherst and graduated from a LAC a few years ago so wrong on both accounts.

I'd agree that social life is mediocre and the sports teams definitely aren't anything to write home about, but that's the typical LAC experience and honestly probably the experience at many of the ivy league/top colleges. It's not like Yale is known for its bustling downtown and crazy parties. Do people go to Princeton so that they can tailgate every weekend?

If the OP was asking between Amherst and Duke or Amherst or UVA where the argument could be made that the difference between academics and recruiting is small but the difference in social life is huge then I think more of an argument could be made against Amherst.

Fordham is in NY but I wouldn't say it has got a great on campus/party atmosphere. It's a commuter school that gets crushed by the other big name schools(NYU and Columbia) in terms of recruiting. It's not a bad school by any means but its a different league than Amherst

You don't have to love Amherst, in fact, you can hate on it all you want, but trying to make the argument that the OP should choose Fordham over Amherst is simply bad information, especially on the grounds that the college experience at Fordham will be better.

You know the show Billions on showtime? The scrappy Chief Assistant U.S. attorney, Bryan Connerty, went to Fordham in the show. They did this to contrast the prestigious and priveledged background of Chuck Rhoades, who went to Yale. Fordham is literally the example the writers selected to depict a non priveledged, lower-tier educational upbringing. Go to Amherst.
