Any insight on TA Associates?

Anyone have any insight about TA Associates particularly regarding lifestyle/comp/recruiting/day-to-day experience/what people have done after associate stint?

Know they have begun doing more majority / LBO type investments in addition to traditional growth equity investments, how does this impact the type of experience you would get here?

Lastly, from the team page, it seems that they are pretty receptive to hiring from consulting, can anyone confirm the extent to which this is true?

Thanks in advance!

Really good returns (see DiscoverOrg - marked at 80x...). One of the few funds without a hurdle due to this. They keep raising larger and larger funds and doing bigger deals. They call themselves “growth private equity” instead of growth equity. Sourcing at associate level but heard it is less then some of their competitors. Could see them following Advents footsteps (which spun out of them) and rapidly growing to MF.

Do they typically go on-cycle? What skills does a TA / Summit look for more in potential hires? How important are technical modeling skills versus communication skills given the role has a large sourcing component?

One of the most highly regarded names in the world of growth equity. Heard comp is very good (in line with larger PE funds). Not sure on lifestyle but would love to hear about that as well.

Typically Associates tend to focus more on investing/execution work relative to other growth equity firms (unlike Summit which is much more sourcing focused), but sourcing is still a component of the Associate role. TA does a variety of investments ranging from traditional growth equity minority investing to growth-based buyout (although it seems like they tend to focus much more on growth-based buyout).

Went on-cycle this past year but believe they left a few off-cycle spots open as well. Technical/modeling skills will certainly be tested, but wouldn’t be surprised if they had a consulting-style case study element as well since that is a common practice for growth equity interviews at the larger funds. They seem to hire consultants relatively frequently but not entirely sure how often. Emphasis seems to be more on people who were in IB or at other growth/private equity firms beforehand based on their website.

Could you please explain what a growth base buyout is?

Incredible returns, reputation and compensation, but have not heard great things culture-wise. Sounds like most of the partners view the firm as an "every man for themself" sort of situation, making the whole culture very competitive and tough, and not in a great way. Only have anecdotal stories from bankers who have sold companies for TA, but nothing from anyone that works there, so please take this with a grain of salt.

Interesting take - was just in a small group recruiting call today with Brian Conway, 1 other partner and Associate. Culture truly seems friendly and genuine with very shape people.  According to them TA's turnover is extremely low and 50%+ senior members were promoted directly from Associate level. Can't speak for comp but wow, those 3 guys were the opposite of toxic
