Morgan Housel is a prominent speaker/writer in finance circles who is open about his struggles with stuttering. He's talked about it a bit, here's one of his blog posts about it: https://www.collaborativefund.com/blog/overcoming-your-demons/
thanks so much for sharing!
I only stutter when I'm overly excited. A shot of whiskey mellows me out.
Whiskey IV drip. Its a game changer.
I do! Junior from a target, would say mine is moderate as well. There's an ex-managing partner from Bain & Co. who stutters, and is on the board of the American Stutterers Association
thanks for sharing man! Do you mind if I PM you?
Hey! I don't check these forums that often, but sure!
If you’re still checking this post, I worked in banking and then moved to private credit and have a stutter. I’m sure you’re familiar with how it goes but a lot of the time I can hide it by switching words mid-sentence etc but it definitely comes out from time to time and in the moment feels embarrassing. Ultimately in my experience no one comments on it and people just politely wait for you to get your thought out. The few times I’ve mentioned it to colleagues out of context they’re always nice and say they don’t notice, which I can’t imagine is true.
Thank you so much for sharing. Do you mind if I PM you?
Hey so sorry I totally missed this. In case this changes anything I wouldn’t say anything over PM I wouldn’t say here but happy to talk over PM if there are questions you’d rather ask privately.
I’m an incoming intern in S&T who has a moderate stutter. I’m kinda curious to see how it plays out, I think my speech was pretty good during my interviews so they probably don’t know. My biggest concern is that people will question how competent I am based off my speech.
I do also have a light/moderate stutter, with more stuttering in stressful weeks / when I don't sleep enough. It was a bit rough at the begining because this fear of speaking up was combined with impostor syndrom, but feeling way better now and it's defintely manageable. I also see a speech therapist once a week, which I highly recommend.
Thank you for sharing. Do you mind if I pm you?
of course
Mild stutter... have to switch around words.. people just assume I’m not from ‘round these parts!
Got a mild stutter as well, from the tri-state area, but comes out less when I’m talking about areas where I really know my shit or feel passionate about
May I ask what has helped you during interviews and network calls? I have had interviews but my stutter tends to flare up more in these situations and would love to know what has helped you
everyone's stutter is different. And has different factors that help improve it or make it worse. Talking about things I'm passionate about such as the markets/finance related topics, or sports I follow generally improves for that period, then back to usual.
If you generate good investment ideas, perform robust research, are passionate about investing, and help improve fund's investment performance, people will not give a shit.
Lot's of quirky people in this business.
I know someone who is an MD at a top 3 bank with an extremely strong stutter.
I also have a mild stutter brought out by stress, so interviews were fun, but still got into BB from MBA
If you don’t mind me asking, Would you disclose it prior to your interviews? I’ve had over 4 interviews for PE and AM summer roles and don’t hear back. I tend to stutter more during interviews and don’t know what to do to help. Still looking for an internship this summer
I did not, but its fairly mild so tbh i think it would generally sound more like i dont know what word to say vs that i have a stutter. Sorry its going rough for you :/
FWIW Biden used to have a stutter in school and sought speech therapy
There is an higher level Analyst in my company that has a pretty strong stutter. I think in a strong professional setting, everyone understands that it's not his choice.
This guy puts out top-notch research and analysis, so everyone listens patiently to what he has to say.
There was a woman who was in MBB, then GSB, and then at Sequoia Capital who had a stuttering problem. I believe she gave a speech while as a student at GSB that is on Youtube. Can't remember her name unfortunately.
Don’t let it stop you! People will respect you more seeing how you push yourself past it in my opinion. Met a guy with Tourettes who worked as an analyst in equity research ( a lot more verbal communication than Ib involved) be like-able, show your passion for the industry and you’ll be ok
Hey, I have a pretty serious stammer (contorted facial expressions, sometimes bite my tongue so hard it bleeds). I’ve tried most of the tricks and unfortunately they don’t really work for me. I think the biggest thing to aim towards is not fluent speech (as even people who don’t stammer find it difficult to speak fluently 24/7) but when you do stammer, to not feel ashamed or awkward about it. As when I don’t feel embarrassed about my speech, I find that the people listening to me don’t either. Sorry I can’t give any actionable tips but just know that having a stammer is similar to having a heavy accent or lisp, it won’t stop you unless you let it.
thank you for sharing that, I appreciate it! Do you mind if I PM you?
Not at all bro, but if there’s no personal details might be best to keep it here as then other people who stammer might be able to benefit :)
or you can try to apply via diversity (diasbilities)
My boss has a stutter. He was pushed into being a quant as a junior and became very skilled modeling. He chose to breakout of the track and now manages clients. Transition was made through hiring a coach on speaking and improved, but never completely removed, his stutter. His push towards the quant side arguably worked in his favor, knows how to do the grunt work so is able to answer client questions on the fly. Take up toastmasters and keep going until you are confident.
