If you’re still checking this post, I worked in banking and then moved to private credit and have a stutter. I’m sure you’re familiar with how it goes but a lot of the time I can hide it by switching words mid-sentence etc but it definitely comes out from time to time and in the moment feels embarrassing. Ultimately in my experience no one comments on it and people just politely wait for you to get your thought out. The few times I’ve mentioned it to colleagues out of context they’re always nice and say they don’t notice, which I can’t imagine is true.

I do also have a light/moderate stutter, with more stuttering in stressful weeks / when I don't sleep enough. It was a bit rough at the begining because this fear of speaking up was combined with impostor syndrom, but feeling way better now and it's defintely manageable. I also see a speech therapist once a week, which I highly recommend.

May I ask what has helped you during interviews and network calls? I have had interviews but my stutter tends to flare up more in these situations and would love to know what has helped you

If you don’t mind me asking, Would you disclose it prior to your interviews? I’ve had over 4 interviews for PE and AM summer roles and don’t hear back. I tend to stutter more during interviews and don’t know what to do to help. Still looking for an internship this summer

FWIW Biden used to have a stutter in school and sought speech therapy

There is an higher level Analyst in my company that has a pretty strong stutter. I think in a strong professional setting, everyone understands that it's not his choice.

This guy puts out top-notch research and analysis, so everyone listens patiently to what he has to say.

Don’t let it stop you! People will respect you more seeing how you push yourself past it in my opinion. Met a guy with Tourettes who worked as an analyst in equity research ( a lot more verbal communication than Ib involved) be like-able, show your passion for the industry and you’ll be ok

Hey, I have a pretty serious stammer (contorted facial expressions, sometimes bite my tongue so hard it bleeds). I’ve tried most of the tricks and unfortunately they don’t really work for me. I think the biggest thing to aim towards is not fluent speech (as even people who don’t stammer find it difficult to speak fluently 24/7) but when you do stammer, to not feel ashamed or awkward about it. As when I don’t feel embarrassed about my speech, I find that the people listening to me don’t either. Sorry I can’t give any actionable tips but just know that having a stammer is similar to having a heavy accent or lisp, it won’t stop you unless you let it.

Not at all bro, but if there’s no personal details might be best to keep it here as then other people who stammer might be able to benefit :)

My boss has a stutter. He was pushed into being a quant as a junior and became very skilled modeling. He chose to breakout of the track and now manages clients. Transition was made through hiring a coach on speaking and improved, but never completely removed, his stutter. His push towards the quant side arguably worked in his favor, knows how to do the grunt work so is able to answer client questions on the fly. Take up toastmasters and keep going until you are confident.
