Are passwords going be to obsolete?
You know that you've forgotten your password before and thought, "Well, if I can't remember my password, then no one else can hack my account and that's great security." But is it? According to Brian Lennon's article,
It seems that passwords can easily be found through malicious means, but that is not even the largest issue with passwords as dissociation is. Poorly chosen and repeatedly used passwords are easy to guess, either through computational techniques (such as the “dictionary attack,” which might test all known words and word combinations in a particular language) or so-called social engineering (that is, tricking someone into disclosing a password).
As the article points out, if a hacker has your password, even if it is a random set alphanumeric characters, they can use it anywhere without your consent. However, if there are biometric security measures, people can only use their biometric security measures if it is associated with them, which leads to added security and control.
In the future, hackers can probably develop techniques to gather biometric data to hack a person's account, but for now, biometric security measures will probably spell the end for passwords.
What are your thoughts?
No idea, but if you're frequently forgetting passwords or still using the old word followed by the number one for your password, consider a password manager. I use LastPass and love it.
No. Do we leave doors open because locks can be picked anyways?
There are some serious Fifth Amendment issues with biometric sensors. At least with a password, you cannot be compelled to disclose it to authorities as it could be self incriminating, should they want to search something locked with a password. However, authorities can compel you to cooperate with their search by unlocking your phone/computer/anything with your thumbprint/face/whatever.
For now, be happy you can still be hacked.
I see the future likely being a combination of both if you have a simple easy to remember password that is coupled with biometrics you get the "best" of both worlds so to speak. You prevent malicious third party attacks and you prevent government intrusion. It's like upfront two factor authentication.
That is a really good point about the 5th amendment.
I really agree to the point. Nowadays you have more chances that your password can be hacked.
Nowadays no personal social accounts are safe and are prone to hacking at anytime.
I agree that accounts are prone to get hacked. What is your solution to make personal accounts safe? How do you think people can attempt to be unhackable?
AI + Biometrics is the future.
How do you think AI plays into password protection in the future? I think AI could be utilized to be the next generation hacker.
Already is (almost) obsolete.
iPhone fingerprint reader makes me forget my account passwords. true story.
True story haha
Passwords definitely aren't obsolete. I would say there will be a shift towards automatic password generation so that incompetent people aren't picking asdf1234 as their passwords.
I agree with you that account security is not obsolete and I believe that passwords with biometrics will be the future. The main concern with passwords is the machines can crack them.
With complicated and long enough passwords, computers can't guess passwords in any reasonable amount of time.
