Artificial intelligence DSS for event driven trading

Shout out to all da hedge monkeys!

Guys, I have a question about decision support systems (DSS) available for event driven trading

What are you guys using, if anything? In a general sense, what tech are you using on the job?

The reason I ask is because I'm interesting in using my tech background to help traders make better decisions

And oh, make it a diet.

c'mon bud, there's other ways to bask in cleverness

tell me what you think about the relationship between a funds investment in tech infrastructure and fund performance

do better algorithms and faster computers equal alpha?

hehe, nice

why the secrecy? is this a sensitive issue?

do the funds have proprietary DS systems? is the competitive advantage of a fund tied to its tech assets?

if funds can't compete in terms of access to data (i.e. insider info), or stock picking ability (i.e. random walk), it seems the natural opportunity for cultivating competitive advantage is gonna revert to analytical capacity for refining data into information

I'd really like to know if funds see them selves as having to compete with other funds for technological advantage in ability to process data

Some quant funds have apparently co-located their trading systems to be physically closer to the exchange than they can be at their offices, to cut down on latency. Clearly, some people think this tech investment is worthwhile and will help generate profits.

rickets, that's a killer illustration. I'm starting to better understand the funds competitive paradigm as more of a war for technology rather than talent or data...data is critical, talent is important for crunching the data, but tech is of utmost importance because it seems to differentiate the team from the competition

I'd really like to find out who the market leaders are in selling HFs data analysis solutions

anyone?

Personally I'm hot on AI, semantic and visualization tools. I'd like to explore how these concepts are applied in financial services

... good luck on that essay/research project/biz Easiest way to solve this Q is look at the % of budget spend on tech. It's next to nothing.

thanks, as part of my honours program I'd like to do a number of surveys with the industry and write a paper on whether % spent on technology correlates with fund performance

also..median fund size is ballooning, so I'm not sure if the low % spend is indicative of low absolute $ investment in tech

...errr...yeah...there's a few issues here

Tech is used to handle basic flow stuff with no margins. Some comapnies use tech to make money (de.shaw) but really its just some crazy ass maths boffin pumping out the material. As usual the computer just does as its told.

I think you are getting overly excited / inflating the "importance" of these algorithms. They're the norm at most bank, but all it does is allow traders to trade more volume quickly as its automated.

that's cool. I appreciate what you're saying, particularly in regards to a limited scope for tech in trading.

however, I'm hoping there are reasons to get excited about novel DS systems

for example, what do you think about Seattle's http://www.intellectspace.com ?

"IntellectSpace FN automatically reveals the hidden interrelationships and spheres of influence among people and organizations associated with your portfolios and prospects. It gives you a clear view of what’s going on in the market – helping you instantly visualize and understand what drives business actions and creates opportunities. It provides the story behind the story."

What does everyone think about these kinds of semantic tools that mine text to visualise trading opportunities?
