Background Check Worries
Hi Guys,
Need some advice. Recently got a FT offer for a top firm with just 1 problem: Did a 'spring intern/week' type thing at a BB (a UK/Europe thing for the Americans here not familiar with it) in my first year which showed up in my background check and the third-party background check company is requesting for alternative contact details at the BB so they can verify but the BB HR is refusing to verify it because it wasn't a formal internship and it was unpaid (no spring-interns/weeks in the UK are paid). I have all emails and confirmation of my acceptance onto the program and time there, will this be OK? Essentially the background check company cannot conduct external verification directly with the firm and will have to rely on my personal evidence and emails for this.
Please help, am freaking out about this now... don't want my offer to get rescinded..
jon18037, hey, look at the bright side, at least you didn't get a ton of monkey shit thrown at you...here is my best guess on threads that might be helpful:
No promises, but maybe one of our professional members will share their wisdom: sarah732 Kinvest CRE SC
If those topics were completely useless, don't blame me, blame my programmers...
I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Just send the third party company the documentation you do have and let them sort it out. These types of requests are very common, like when a boss leaves a previous company and can’t verify you. I’m sure they have seen this lots of times before and the documentation you have sounds reasonable - just send it in.
Thank you for your response, your words are reassuring. I have indeed just sent my documentation over to the background check company, but if anyone else had to verify their time at spring intern/spring insight weeks in the UK please post here and let me know!
Any SPECIFIC information regarding verification of spring internships in the UK I would greatly appreciate, thank you.
I cannot possibly imagine this being an issue unless you tried to hide it from them.
If you have emails etc. showing you were there, that should be more than enough. It sounds like HR is just being a bit ridiculous which happens often.
Thanks, nope I have not tried to hide it from them and have been fully upfront on my CV, although it might be considered 'embellishment' since it wasn't necessarily a full Spring Internship but was a week-long spring 'insight week' which is common for first-year students in the UK looking to break into IB. The job title might trip me up here, any ideas?
Seems pretty reasonable to me. Did you list a time period for it on your resume? Or say something like, "July 2018"?
I'm not familiar with that type of program, but I'm sure it'll be fine. Sounds like they just want to know for sure that you were there and aren't making it up. Emails should clear that up.
Yes, on my resume it is listed which makes it clear that it could not have been for more than a month (i.e. for example January 2083-January 2083). I've just sent across the email confirmations so hopefully I am just worrying about nothing :P
Thanks for your responses though, you have no idea how worried I am atm. I worked my ass off to get this FT job for the last few years and don't want something as simple as this to throw me off.
Happy to offer some input.
I've been there. For the job I have now I was terrified of the background and credit check but it all worked out.
