Will I pass my background check???

So.... I am kinda freaking out here.

I got a full time offer from an Investment bank today and I have accepted it, but now I am worried about my background check because:

  1. I listed my first degree's GPA 3.5 while the actual GPA is 3.45, will they rescind my offer because of that?? My current degree which is the most recent one's GPA is exactly what I listed on my resume (3.7), but my first degree's GPA is off by 0.05, would that be a problem?? I am really concerned.

  2. My first internship (I had 3 internships in total) lasted from Nov 2015 - March 2016 (late march almost april), and I listed the dates from Nov 2015 - April 2016 in stead on my resume. I don't know if it's gonna be a problem for them?

Also this internship place doesn't exist anymore (It went bankrupt this summer due to poor mgt) and I don't know how they are going to verify it? But I did work there and there are around 20 employees who would be able to prove that I worked there before, but I don't know how to contact them because their old work emails are not in use.

I am really worried and I worked really hard to get this gig, so I don't want it to get rescinded, anyone has any insights?

Thanks!

You should be fine, my firm required a transcript but they never asked for it nor did they request it from anyone well, nor do I think you rounding up from a 3.45 to a 3.5 is going to screw you.

Background checks are more about researching your criminal history and where you have lived and what not, they're most likely not researching your previous work experience.

Don't worry at all.

Thank you!

But I heard it's common for future employers have background check people call your previous internship places and verify the dates?? Is that true? What happens if they find out that I listed April in stead of March?

Also, when do they usually conduct background checks?

Thanks!

They never verified any of my employment, and for all they know you ending in April could have been April 30th which is practically May.

My background check happened pretty much as soon as I accepted the offer and I might have had to allow them to conduct a background check on me, not really sure, but I got papers in the mail maybe 2 weeks later after accepting my offer that showed all of the info that my company received as well. None of which had employment information, it just showed where I had lived and whether or not I had been charged/convicted of any crimes.

They do the background checking only for ensuring that the employee has a clean record and do not involve in the unethical or other frauds activities, etc. So that the name of their company reputation is not harmed.

So long as the company that went under didn't do so for unethical reasons you should be fine. Also, any company worth its salt should understand that, as an intern, you weren't the one pulling the strings and making the decisions that led to the company's ultimate collapse.

As far as background checks are concerned, HR can only verify that you worked at a certain place between certain dates, nothing more. This only changes if you list specific people as references on your resume. If so, give them a heads up and just tell them not to fuck you. It's better to list "References available upon request" on your resume.

Good luck with the piss test!

Thanks!! So you guys think I will be fine? I lost sleep over this last night.. Sigh

I did not list "references available upon request" on my resume, I am thinking to send HR an "updated" resume before background check? And I will of course update all those info in my new resume like change my gpa to 3.45 and the internship date from Nov 2015 - March 2016 instead of April.

Since my previous resume was sent to her like 1 month ago and I may have a legitimate reason to "update" it because in new year I will be working at my new internship place for 4 months now and the old one was not updated.

Can I do that? Maybe that is a smart move?

Don't send a new resume. They do background checks off of official applications, which you will likely have to fill out. Having your dates off by 1 month is not a big deal and will look like a clerical error. They will ask you for references if needed.

If you only showed a single decimal in your GPA, everyone knows you rounded up, which is technically correct from a 3.45. Take this as a lesson to pay attention to detail on your resume in the future, but you should be fine.

And also, before the background check, will the HR notify you or send you documents to fill out or something?

She just told me more details regarding background check will be coming in new year but did not specify.

I really hope I pass background check and not get screwed.

HR typically just has the firm doing the background check do it off of your original resume and the online application you filled out for the job. So they may have you complete the job application if you haven't already.

And as other have said, 3.45 to 3.5 rounding is correct. A month extra should be seen as a clerical error and will probably be overlooked anyway, I wouldn't stress.

My advice may be out of date. They used to make you do formal application post-offer. Resumes were used for the interview process and then they'd make you fill out a more detailed application. Hopefully this has changed as the old way was tedious and unnecessary.

that is nothing. i have seen people who fudged a lot more get through a background check so you have nothing to worry about.
