BB HF/PE vs HF and MFs

Hey,
So until now I didn't realize that BBs actually have their own HFS and PE. Are these true PE funds and HFS, or are they more fund of funds? How would working at Goldman PE or HF compare to a traditional MF or elite HF?

Goldman has groups that do direct PE deals (merchant banking division, special situations group) and groups that do a mixture of PE co-investments and secondaries (AIMS PE). I believe the former were recently consolidated into one private investing group.

If you check LinkedIn, people frequently exit from all of the above groups to UMM and MF PE.

That's interesting, do you have any idea of how the comp and lifestyle compares in working at a BB in PE compared to a MF? Would a BB be considered better, or worse usually than working at a MF?

Can only speak to AIMS PE at the junior level, but comp is on par with BB IBD and hours are slightly better.

Do you know how to go about applying for MBD roles? Do they have a standard junior summer application process via online submission and a structured process, or is it through informal channels like talking to people?

Not entirely sure -- maybe someone else can jump in here. I would assume almost all of their interns come from OCR.
