BC Carroll and UNC
I am deciding where to go for college - Boston College, Carroll School of Management or UNC (will apply for admission to the business school the Sophomore year). I am interested in finance/IB. I want to get your advice which college to attend to maximize my chance in getting a good finance/IB position after four years of college. I think the undergraduate business admission rate at UNC is about 40-50%. So there will be a certain pressure in keeping a good GPA and EC activities to get into the business school if I go to UNC.
I have got some info by googling. But I really can use some real-world expertise and advice.
By the way I am also admitted by Wake Forest University (will need to apply for business admission later), George Tech (business) and Boston University (business). I assume these schools are no better than BC and UNC.
I would go with UNC. The alumni network is vast, the business school is top 15, and the school gets good recruiting.
I am also waiting for Emory's admission decision (need to apply to the business school the second year). How does it compare to Carroll and UNC?
To be honest I know a lot of people who went to schools and later got rejected from their business programs(were a bit salty about it later). I would lean towards going to BC and just hustling. I know its easy to say keep your GPA at a 4.0 and go to UNC, but realistically that is not going to be the case for everyone.
I would say UNC (assuming you want to be either in Charlotte or Atlanta), assuming you get in to the program. Getting in is easier said than done and definitely not a given, but if you don't get in, you likely won't be competitive at any of the other schools either.
I know it is a lot to ask of a high schooler, but making the best decision will hinge on you "knowing" what you want to do down the road (I wanted to be an accountant when I was a freshman....LOL).
If you are interested in simply finance - F500, PWM, etc. - you should be able to get a good job from BC, UNC, WF, GT (disclaimer: I know nothing about BU). Considerations given this route, BC/WF are expensive private schools, UNC/GT are public schools (not sure where you're from, but even out-of-state will be cheaper than BC/WF).
BUT if you are interested in IB, this answer changes drastically. People at BC don't go into IB. I know someone at a top BB and they just coincidentally stumbled upon it through an affirmative sophomore program. UNC/WF/GT, I believe, will all be similar. But that is probably the order of placement. Also depends on where you want to be. For NY, I think UNC/WF are about even with a handful of kids placing each summer. Also, for CLT UNC/WF both place better into Wells/BAML. Then for ATL, GT places the best because of SunTrust.
TL;DR - This decision is going to be very dependent on what you want to do, where you want to be, etc. Even then, the decision is all but a clear one. I know that people say it all the time, but in this case (because they are all so similar with placement) especially I think you should decide based on the school you like the best. All four (I'm not including BU) will be completely different college experiences.
I went to BC CSOM, and I'll disagree with the guy above that said BC kids dont go into banking. Maybe we dont have as many kids interested in banking and pursue consulting/accounting since all the big 4 and some Consulting shops recruit via OCR, but I wouldn't say BC would hinder your ability to seek IB roles. I can only speak for the year I graduated and I know kids from my class that got into IB via OCR with: JPM, UBS, DB, Barclays, Jefferies, HW. I also have some friends at other banks (BAML, Citi, CS, WF, other smaller banks too) that got their position via resume drops and not OCR. It also isnt hard to find alumni at most banks but I'm sure you can say the same about UNC.
I'm not sure how UNC works with their UG Bus school, so I cant speak on that. From what you said, it looks like you have to bet on your abilities and decide whether you think you can grind hard and get into the their UG business school. I would consider UNC a bit more b/c I've always been a bit jealous of their basketball program and how that adds to campus life, but idk if thats something that matters to you.
If you'd like you can PM me with any questions about BC
I think you should pick the school that appeals to you the most outside of your ideal career, especially at 18. Which campus did you like better, which had prettier girls, which has a better social life etc? There is something to be said for going to school in a college town like Chapel hill with a great basketball team and a beautiful campus. There is also something to be said for going to BC, living in a big city and experiencing that side of life. Choose the one that appeals to you the most from a personal perspective. Don't pick BC because living in Boston will prepare you for life in NYC because a) it wont and b) that's dumb. Choose an environment that you think will make you the happiest and most likely to be successful as a student.
EDIT: I live in Boston and it's a great city. My cousin goes to UNC and she couldn't be happier. They are both outstanding schools and you will have ample opportunity if you work hard and follow the steps people on here outline as being essential to getting into banking - networking, reading, internships at banks, etc.
I know an analyst from UNC and also from BC, and it seems for NYC BC is the way to go. All but 2-3 bulge brackets come on campus. UNC is great for any of the middle market banks not in NYC like in charlotte / atlanta is what I gathered.
With that being said, it seems UNC is overall the more fun school and I'd personally would rather go there. 3 or so bulge brackets come on campus and 1-4 other bulge brackets/Moelis do phone interviews. It's an uphill battle but there are a few UNC alums at most all of the banks.
I went to school in Boston. IB in NYC is definitely possible out of both BC and BU, with BC definitely having more on OCR opportunities. Can't speak to the other ones though
Maybe only tangentially relevant but lots of BC kids in BB S&T
I think UNC is your best bet, for reasons others have already mentioned
Echo everyone. Choose your college on other factors please. You can get to anywhere from either schools.
I don't have info about BC IB placement. I do have info about UNC placement. Couple to handful go to each BB (except for Citi and DB, both of which don't come to campus. All other BB on campus, except for CS, but CS takes a couple each year as well). Another handful will place at EB...Lazard Feres, Guggenheim, maybe Moelis (no Evercore or Centerview or PJT etc).
I had to prepare for an AP class test and found many responses when I came back. I am really thankful for your comments, replies and advice. I don't think it's a easy decision as many factors could play into it.
I think rankings of BC and UNC are similar, perhaps with UNC a bit higher. businessweek places BC CSOM a bit above UNC kenan-flagler. In the same rating, it puts BC above Stern and so on. But US News places UNC much higher.
I am a decent student but still have doubt if I can get into UNC business school. What will I do if I don't get in for some reason.
From what I see, the location of UNC didn't seem to put it in much disadvantage. But I'd prefer NYC/Boston for its closeness to Wall Street. I am from North Carolina but the cost is not a big factor. I'd have more friends from middle/high school in UNC. Not sure old friendship in college is that important or not.
The last few days are brutal in getting waitlisted/rejected. Anyway, I will visit BC to get first hand experience, do more research and make a decision.
Thanks for your help and I may post more questions later. By the way, I found here this old thread interesting: is-bc-carroll-the-real-deal
Yeah one last point. If you are not at a caliber to get into Kenan Flagler, I doubt BC Carroll can do much good for ya either.
I'm assuming you are in state for UNC. If tuition is cheaper there, I would pick UNC over BC. Carolina weather vs Boston weather. Think about it.
If you want to break into IB, UNC offers some good options because of its close proximity to Charlotte. You can leverage a sophomore gig at WF into a junior SA in NYC.

Which offers better placement nation wide into Investment Banking? I know UNC has a better ranked business school, but I feel BC carries a lot of weight with its name. Any help? Thanks
UNC
UNC 100% especially if you're in-state
UNC places better than BC. Go to UNC.
