Bernie Sanders for the Republican Party

The purpose of this post is to discuss what a populist candidate would mean for the Republican Party.

Bernie has appealed to many disaffected democrats who have been left out (no pun) of the capitalistic system.

I think there's a way to align several groups to make some meaningful progress forward. Here are some ideas:

  • Tie Global Warming to the National Deficit. Both affect future generations and have the potential to wreck the economy.

  • Develop a debt forgiveness system based on grades and ability to find employment. STEM fields would receive higher loan balances and better forgiveness rates. If you realize these fields aren't for you, you can drop out in the first year and owe half of your tuition balance.

  • Allow bankruptcy for a portion of the outstanding debt. Test these folks belief that bankruptcy would fix their borrowing problems and forbid any government subsidized loan for 15 years post bankruptcy.

  • Create a National program for college savings which lock-in the cost of college. This exists for the "Texas Tomorrow Fund" which allowed me to go to college for $60 all in for four years. My parents just had to plan ahead a bit.

  • Tie the cost of college tuition (all in) to future job prospects. You shouldn't be able to charge more than what is available to repay in 20 years or less. That'll help keep the cost of higher education down.

Any other ideas?

The Republican Party has had a populist leader since 2016.

  • GW/environment: if you exclude the overly influential paid shills, most conservatives are fine with environmental policies. Unfortunately, looking at the the Green New Deal, Sanders and co. pair environment with state take over of the economy and restriction of personal liberties, and those are the least crazy you see coming from that corner. The alarmist tone of imminent catastrophe combined with radical leftists proposals simply fuels alienation and distrust, making cooperation impossible.
  • Student loans/college funding: Sanders blames Wall Street, conservatives blame the universities. Truth of the matter, so long that the academia will increasingly field the social justice crowd, there is no reason conservatives will be interested in funding a side that wants their cultural, social and economic annihilation.
  • bankruptcy: again depends on what and why. If bankruptcy is there to encourage irresponsible consumer behavior, you won't find much support.

I find Bernie 2020 much less reasonable and tolerable than 2016.

Never discuss with idiots, first they drag you at their level, then they beat you with experience.

What on Earth does this have to do with Bernie Sanders? I certainly don't speak for all conservatives, but I speak for many of us--we will never do business with a Chavez-supporting, Castro-praising, Soviet-supporting communist piece of human excrement like Bernie Sanders. We will never do business with a guy who makes common ground with terrorists and terrorist supporters. Bernie Sanders should have been hanged for treason in the 1980s. The very idea that he could be head of state of the United States is sickening. 100% of his ideas are DOA in Congress. If the Republicans still hold the Senate they may not even approve the communist's cabinet appointments.

Fuck Sanders and his supporters. The communists murdered 100 MILLION people in the 20th century, and he praised these people and defended them for his entire life.

Are you kidding?

This is a 2011(!) editorial on Sanders' website lauding Venezuela.

Sanders has urged the nationalization of most major industries and has NEVER repudiated this stance.

Sanders honeymooned in the Soviet Union and praised it just a few years before it collapsed into oblivion. While most Democrats and Republicans were Cold Warriors, locked in battle with the demonic Soviet Regime, responsible for tens of millions of murders and the enslavement of hundreds of millions of people, he's in the USSR glad-handing these subhumans.

Here is a long list of his radicalism, including his tacit support for the Iranian Revolution, his praise for Castro and support of the Sandinistas.

Sanders is one of the worst actors in American politics, and his supporters--anti-Semities like AOC, Ilhan Omar, and Linda Sarsour--demonstrate that he is still a scum-sucking communist pig.

I'm a solid Republican. and would be interested in exploring a few of the policy ideas you noted. But that brings me to my point - these would mostly be viewed as anathema by a good chunk of the Democratic party (who are absofuckinglutely unhinged . . . even James Carville agrees) aka they aren't really "compromises" like you hint at.

That said, fuck Bernie Sanders.

The other day, I looked at the debt balance as a % of GDP. Reagan increased it considerably after increasing and then aggressively decreasing taxes. Clinton had the benefit of the .com run up and balanced the budget. GB2 aggressively increased the debt from $5T to $10T and Obama continued the trend at a higher degree by spending $1.3T in deficit per year, doubling the debt from $10T to $20T. Trump is doing largely the same thing at about $1.2T per year of budget deficit.

We'll never pay this debt back at the current rate of increase.

Ironically, student debt forgiveness will push us very close to not being able to ever get back to 100% of GDP which will make reducing the acceleration prohibitively difficult. We'll have to "forgive" the National Debt as well.
