Best alternative summer internship?

Currently a sophomore at a semi-target. I was unable to obtain a summer internship in i-banking or pe. I'll be doing this boutique consulting internship that focuses on matching venture capital and finding M&A deals for startup companies. Could I be able to spin this somehow? Would this help my resume at all for IBD and how good of an alternative is this internship in relation to other internship?

I understand the anxiety/compulsion that you all feel in regards to getting internships to set yourself up for an SA position at a BB, but please realize it's not the end of the world if you go into your sophomore/junior year without actual IB experience. During the SA recruiting process, banks are not expecting to find students with such an abundance of internship experience and finance know-how that they can just sit them at the desk and let them go to town working out the kinks on the Microsoft-Yahoo Merger to LBO model. As an SA you will probably barely be a net positive in terms of the firm's bottom line considering their cost: your salary and all of the money that they will spend on your formal training and the lost productivity while you are being informally trained at the desk.

There is no "spinning" necessary for your upcoming internship. It sounds like a great learning opportunity. At this point in your career, anything related to finance or banking is going to be a positive on your resume. Do good work while you are there and make sure that you can take some real, valuable experiences away from it that you can speak to during an interview.
