Hi all, I am looking for a new computer, would like to specify that I will be using it to do a fair amount of work. I am looking for something that is quick, efficient, and does not have any of the modeling/short-cut issues of a mac. Don't really have any further specifications, but I literally know nothing about how to go about picking out a modern day PC. I really just want something that won't stall on loading numerous programs and can handle larger excel files, nothing fancy. Thanks in advance

Are you talking a laptop or a desktop? When it comes to desktop PC's, the best value will always be in buying the individual components yourself and building your own machine.
I'm sorry I should have specified I am looking for a laptop. But thank you for the tip, I'll keep that in mind next time I am in the market for a new desktop.

That's way more than you need to spend for a laptop unless you want a gaming laptop. Costco has awesome deals, great quality, and an unbeatable return policy though.

We have different ideas of low, my man! You can do just fine for $400-$500. For like $700, you can get something with 16GB RAM and 1TB, 15.6'' screen, fucking overkill. Watch oculus porn while modeling all day

$1,500? You can buy like 3 laptops with that and still have change. Like people mentioned above, just go to Costco and pick one up. Honestly you don't even need to look at the specs of the computer if it's at least $500, because they'll all have at least 12GB of ram these days, which is plenty enough for daily use. Keep an eye out for Lenovo or Acer and AVOID HP like the plague. HP gave me MAD problems in the past...

Before Motorola, they bought IBM's laptop business. That's where the ThinkPad branding comes from.
Big fan of my Lenovo X1 Carbon though it does pretty much hit your spend limit - super light weight, runs fine with Matlab/multiple Excel files/bunch of Chrome windows+tabs.
Dell XPS 13/15 will be a bit cheaper (13 will) and both are solid laptops. Reddit's got a lot of opinions on the all three of the models if you want to read more in-depth reviews.
Do your research and buy a laptop that has solid reviews. Some might have good specs but absolutely suck a dick after a year. Ex. My Lenovo y700. Make sure to get a good warranty and don't get screwed. CPU and gpu matter a lot more than you think, because you usually only use like 4gb of ram (unless you're doing some intense shit). Definitely get an ssd instead of hdd. And in terms of modeling, are you just talking about the basic excel stuff? Or are we talking simulations as well? Look at battery life and weight as well.
For that much money make sure you get one with CPU (NNP) drive. A neural-net processor..a learning computer
I used Lenovos at my old company for 4 years. They were pretty bulletproof.
Personally, I use Dells because they are cheap and pretty reliable. Cheap as in my current computer was $500 - been working for 2 years.
I have been buying Dells since 2000. Back then my Inspiron was like $2500, much more expensive than now.
