Blackberry's in IB
Recently, BB announced that they would stop manufacturing these devices. What do you guys think happens now? Will banks switch to something else or BYOD with some sort of corporate plan.
Also, do any of the big banks give out anything other than a BB?
Most banks are switching over or have already switched over to apps like Good for your iphones or android devices. There some alternatives but all the apps are trash at the moment. Hopefully, they get better over time or some startup figures out a way to do it better.
yeah, some banks are using proprietary apps instead of good app or other generic ones. Main problem is the lack of notification in each case.. I hate having to login & check every hour or so on the weekends..
Yeah I've used both Good and MobileIron, the lack of notifications is ridiculous. Every morning is a struggle being in a west coast office, you have no idea if some MD in NY decided to get up early and fire off a bunch of emails. Building proprietary apps for mail is a waste of resources imo. Data Security firms will figure out how to get it right in the long run and have a lot more resources at their disposal. However, I guess they do save a lot of money from not buying everyone BBs which they can use to build their own app.
Can you expand on why these apps are trashy? I had MobileIron when I was in IB, and it never interfered with my work. Granted, I have not used Good.
Corporate iPhones ftw
Same at my bank. So much better than using Good or Mobileiron. Still glitchy though with push notifications every so often which is super frustrating.
Yup. Especially when people accept outlook calendar invites. Sometimes the notifications come a day after invitees have accepted which doesn't help me at all
Don't forget every time a new iOS is released to change all your settings again or you may wake up to a few mad MDs.
Blackberries are dead. I don't know a single banker who has one.
When I was in banking, I used my personal iPhone for work. My bank paid the monthly bill, but required that I use MobileIron. At my current corp dev role, I have a separate work phone. I honestly miss only having one phone.
BlackBerries alive and well in my NYC BB. Models are old and doesn't hold charge so well anymore, but who cares. Still better than having to log in to Good every time.
UBS?
Nah US bank.
Same here unfortunately. I'd also love having just one phone.
GS?
I'de say from experience 60% of offices I work with use BB's- everyone complains about them.
We went iPhone w/ Outlook. Loving it.
My whole desk and floor still uses BB's. I am pretty sure Blackberry phones will still be manufactured, just completely outsourced now.
the future is Synchrony

One of the few ways in which my firm was forward-looking was in allowing the use of iPhones/Android phones. That's where the future is headed.
I have a blackberry. The alternative is to use Good. However, I saw a commercial banker with a corporate iPhone and was pretty jealous.
