Bloomberg Terminal Experience
Hi fellow monkeys,
I am wondering how somebody can gain experience with Bloomberg terminal other than at work.
For instance, I am a student, and I have never done anything on Bloomberg,
How to get some experience, some insight, etc.
Thank you,
I am assuming that you have access to a bloomberg terminal at your school? Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe bloomberg has tutorials and instructional videos accessible through the terminals? Bloomberg university I think it's called.
That's correct. You type in BESS into the terminals which should take you to the essentials training. Completion is required for all members of my school's investment fund.
Great, I couldn't remember what it was - thanks for confirming
Thanks, I will check at my school.
Various college libraries will publish a BB help guide such as this one: http://www.insead.edu/library/training/docs/cheatsheet.pdf
Google 'bloomberg cheat sheet' and you should be able to come acrossenough material to get you started
BU is the function for Bloomberg University. If you complete the first round of videos and the Equity Essentials exam you can get the Bloomberg Equity Essentials Certification which is fairly helpful and worth the time.
Help desk is also a great tool. anything you are stuck on or would like to know they can help you out with pretty quickly and efficiently. If you google Bloomberg Functions it is pretty easy to find decent list of the basic functions you need for Equity Analysis.
I work as a TA for a masters class teaching Bloomberg to the international students and help desk has been a huge help when I am coming up with the lesson plans. I started today putting together an assignment on technical analysis and back testing certain screens, which I have never done on the terminal, but between google and their support it shouldn't be too bad.
You're welcome, hope it will help you

Currently I'm at an internship where the employees rarely use their bloomberg terminal and I have been trying to get myself aquainted with it.
If my ultimate goal is to work in either research or trading, is there anything in specific I should look at that might help me learn more?
Are there any notes from strategists on various desks that I could pull up?
I'm also doing the basic training program on it at the moment.
Anything else I should be doing especially if I am interested in the FI/FX/C side?
Learn to use Bloomberg's API function. You can build models with live data this way- makes it easier on modeling as you don't have to constantly manually input data.
Use the "BU" function and watch the training videos. Helps when first learning it. I learned it by spending countless hours researching stuff while at school. Only way to learn it is by spending time on it.
Yeah, spend as much time as possible on it. Getting certified is nice on the resume, but to be able to function effectively on it you just need to put in the time.
