Boss suggesting I fake a job offer to increase pay--what do you think?
Hi All,
I wanted to get some input regarding an idea my boss is proposing--to fake a job offer and use it as leverage to boost my pay.

Don't fake a job offer - you get called on it and your reputation and word (and possibly job) is as good as fucked with your current firm.
And given the number of years exp - this could be a good time for a MBA, to use to move to a different job and to get a bump up in salary.
Whatever you do, please do not fake a job offer. You will regret it if you do.
please read this before you decide to fake a job offer: http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/jeffrey-chiang-you-will-never-in-…
Yeah, doesn't sound like a good idea at all man. I'd tread carefully if I were you.
Seems like everyone involved is being reasonable and willing to work to raise your comp, why risk things by pulling a fake job offer out of no where?
rather than fake a job offer, how about getting a real job offer? this is a totally serious suggestion, and it will definitely increase your pay. i work with a girl who just did this very thing, to her great success. the best return on investment in her career - spending a few hours on the interview process. I know it's a tough market, but i would not risk faking the offer. wait til you really have something big, and then sting them with the "i'm leaving unless you pay me more" talk.
btw i thought PMs made WAY more than 85k?

I actually did this....in high school when I was working as a waiter and THEY caught me so I'm fairly certain that your organization will find out the reality of the situation as well.
I agree with gamenumbers, best way to get out of your current situation is to land an ACTUAL job offer. If they are really undercutting you by 30% it shouldn't be hard to get an offer for more...
pants bringing perspective as always
First of all shouldn't your boss be in a position to control your pay?
Second, I don't think companies just take your word when you tell them you have another offer. I am sure they will ask you for the offer letter or some proof. You asking for a lot of trouble and in your business dishonesty is not taken lightly. Stick it out or get out, but don't try to cut corners, you'll get burned.
