Boss suggesting I fake a job offer to increase pay--what do you think?

Hi All,

I wanted to get some input regarding an idea my boss is proposing--to fake a job offer and use it as leverage to boost my pay.

Yeah, doesn't sound like a good idea at all man. I'd tread carefully if I were you.

Seems like everyone involved is being reasonable and willing to work to raise your comp, why risk things by pulling a fake job offer out of no where?

rather than fake a job offer, how about getting a real job offer? this is a totally serious suggestion, and it will definitely increase your pay. i work with a girl who just did this very thing, to her great success. the best return on investment in her career - spending a few hours on the interview process. I know it's a tough market, but i would not risk faking the offer. wait til you really have something big, and then sting them with the "i'm leaving unless you pay me more" talk.

btw i thought PMs made WAY more than 85k?

I actually did this....in high school when I was working as a waiter and THEY caught me so I'm fairly certain that your organization will find out the reality of the situation as well.

I agree with gamenumbers, best way to get out of your current situation is to land an ACTUAL job offer. If they are really undercutting you by 30% it shouldn't be hard to get an offer for more...

First of all shouldn't your boss be in a position to control your pay?

Second, I don't think companies just take your word when you tell them you have another offer. I am sure they will ask you for the offer letter or some proof. You asking for a lot of trouble and in your business dishonesty is not taken lightly. Stick it out or get out, but don't try to cut corners, you'll get burned.

Do what you want not what you can!
