Bridgewater Portfolio Associate?

I was curious if anyone has any insights about the Portfolio Associate role at Bridgewater? I understand this is not a direct investing or research type role (more like portfolio construction/execution), but is it a good place to start on buyside (my background is MBA+ 2yrs IBD/ER and my goal is to move to buyside portfolio management)? What is the exit option and what is the compensation like (including bonus)?

Thanks!

If you should work there or not only matters if you get an offer, until then there's no harm in applying, as with every job opening.

Having BW on your resume make you stand out. Through friends I know, BW has a unique culture, a 2-year non-compete, and pays very well. If you're goal is to become a PM, note there is no PMs at BW. For exit opportunities look at people who've been in this role and what they're doing now on Linkedin.

Thanks, but do you think the portfolio operation role is more like middle-office type of role since it is not really involved in the investment decision process? As compared to a direct investment analyst role in a traditional HF, does the brand name matter more?

It can be hard to define front or middle office with non-traditional HF structures, like BW, and brand definitely matters. I simply don't have the knowledge to tell you it's a front or middle office role. However, BW’s Investment Associate role is the closest BW has to an analyst working under a PM, if that's what you consider ”front office”.

In general exiting BW to a L/S short equity hedge fund seems weird, but going to an asset manager or another global macro firm is reasonable.
