Business Dev at Fintech Startup to VC?
Hi all - For background, I'm currently in my early-mid 20's, work in sales at a profitable and fast-growing tech/data startup. I have the option to move into a Business Development role at a huge Fintech startup that just raised their Series D and is valued at a little under $3B.
The Business Development role at this company would not only encompass a sales aspect, but also aspects of marketing, partnerships, and a little product development. From speaking with current employees on the BD team there, it seems as though you learn a ton about the business and are constantly working with different teams to literally develop the business (lol).
Anyways, I want to at some point move into VC and I want to know if taking this position will help me do so. I've read and heard from multiple online sources that you can go from BD at a trendy startup that grows quickly and IPOs well into a junior VC role. What I'm wondering is:
1. Is that true? Or does it have to be literally the next Palantir, Snapchat, FB, etc.?
and
2. Will VC's discount the fact that I came into the company at a slightly late time (just coming off Series D) or is it still good that I'm coming in pre-ipo in a spot where new partnerships and products are most important to a successful Series F and IPO?
Really appreciate the help here, everyone. Thanks.
