Can I break into IBD?

I currently work at a BB in a middle office role. I've networked with people in IBD here, but they are not currently hiring and I only recently finished up my MBA part time. The firm paid for it.

My thoughts on next steps were just to stay in touch with the people I've spoken to in case the new class of Associates has anyone fall through. Otherwise I don't know what other options I have internally.

I've also sent my resume out to some other places like Evercore and Lazard but only through the firm websites.

Thoughts? Critiques?

it's gonna be tough to break into BB IBD from a middle office role, especially if you've networked with people already and they are telling you there are no open positions.

honestly, with your profile I wouldn't be targeting elite boutiques either - they can be even harder to break into than bulge bracket firms right now. instead, focus on landing something with a MM boutique advisory firm that has a solid team (say from BB pedigree, even better if it's the one you're in) and a sound reputation. with the right exposure to senior management and a couple of years of experience under your belt, you should then have a bit more latitude to choose where you want to go.

I hear that, although my current role is in valuation so I do have modeling experience which doesn't come with most BO/MO roles. The finance wouldn't be over my head. Does that make a difference?

I've met guys here in IBD that came out of full time MBA programs who had no finance experience. Other than the full-time vs part-time I think I have better experience. This particular person happened to be military which I know is looked upon favorably, however.

I don't mean to be rude but how on earth did you land a role at a BB with a CV like that? You've graduated 10 years ago been working since but honestly the way your CV is presented doesn't do justice to a NYU Stern graduate who's currently VP at a BB.

The formatting is all over the place I honestly can't even being to start. I don't think you're making the most of your 10 years experience in the industry. There's really only about 60% of a page's worth of content there, but with your experience you should be struggling to fit it all in 2 pages nevermind 1. You need to really break your experience down, state all the major projects and your contribution to them.

Your credentials are pretty good, obviously it takes a very able person to become VP at a BB. I couldn't say what your chances are as an experienced hire but needless to say I think networking will be absolutely key. You'll need people who know of your ability and your results to vouch for you.

I would strongly recommend you look at some example CVs (or use the M&I template). Surely you must have seen your fair share of CVs as a VP?

Thanks for the input. Ill change the format.

I know typically FO resumes have each project and the role you played in getting the deal done. My experience isn't really like that. I see all deals and evaluate them each quarter while working with the deal team to learn about the performance so I can rationalize our carrying value.

As for how I got the job, it was really a stroke of luck. When I interviewed I was an auditor and I felt like the recruiter was sending me here just to show me something lofty, and once I got rejected I figured he would throw me a product control role which I would never have considered. But I interviewed well, got the job and worked to get promoted to VP. Now that my MBA is finished I want to transition.

da fuck. so the first position listed has "6/2007" and the second position ends "06/2007"

under education you have "9/2007 to 08/2012"

second under education is "09/98 to 05/02"

i think you need to go with the two-digit month and four-digit year, i.e. 05/2004, or personally i prefer the three letter month and four-digit year. i.e. Jul 2001 - Dec 2004

also the dashes between dates are different sizes. that all stood out the me immediately and thus i didnt even read your resume because its already in the trash. ATTENTION TO DETAIL is key, esp in IBD. and if you can't perfect the format on your resume then how do you expect someone to anticipate that you will perfect a pitchbook...

fix the formatting errors and then i'll have a read.
