Can I negotiate relocation bonus?

I thought I was going to get 10k but they said 3k because I live pretty close to NYC already and I know my expenses will be atleast 5k to move. Can I negotiate that up at a BB? I have a call with HR regarding relocation assistance tomorrow, should I try? Or will It make me look bad?

Could push and ask a softball like "is that standard or is based off location / other factors". Then unless they say standard you can say "ok I was just inquiring because I've got the moved priced out and it was coming in closer to ~5k and then shut up and see what they say.

Two points to consider 1) its probably not worth creating a shit storm over 2k 2) 5k seems like a lot to move within New York?

Yeah agreed it’s prob not worth really arguing over but its a lot less than I expected I guess and yeah when you factor putting down a deposit on an apartment + new appliances if your apartment isn’t furnished it can come to 5k pretty quickly.

The number is a bit low, and I would address it as the other poster said. I wouldn’t bring up deposit or new appliances. 1) new appliances are almost never needed in nyc - where are you moving to? Seems odd 2) a deposit is just a hold, not an expense of moving, you get that money back.

But again, $3k is a bit low as a “signing” bonus, most relocation packages are bigger (and can be significantly more robust as you get more senior).
