The kind of skills you will learn at a FOFs don't correlate too strongly with the kind of skills you will need at a PE shop or HF. That is, at a FOFs you focus on manager selection and due diligence, but you really don't drill down into how to buy individual assets (be that shorting a stock at a HF or buying a company in PE).

Having said that, you will learn a lot about different managers and their strategies, so you can use that knowledge to go over to the direct investing side.

So the move is defintley not impossible, but I just want you to understand the skill sets are different.

Thanks for response. As far as the types of roles are concerned The team manages a portfolio of limited partnership interests focused on domestic and international investments including hedge funds, leveraged buyouts, growth/venture capital, mezzanine, energy and distressed securities investments. The company is also a major player in the U.S. Private equity industry. The program is 4 years so after this program ends what types of opportunities should I persue given the type of experience? Also, If you can shed light on compensation that would be great.
