can someone please give me some insight?

I've been heavily focusing on on-campus recruiting at my school and have, fortunately, gotten lots of interviews... but no second rounds! I've already gotten at least 5 phone calls telling me that I was an excellent candidate and if the markets weren't this bad, I would definitely be a shoo-in. I have a high GPA, target school, waiting to hear back from my summer at a BB about a full-time offer... I just don't get it!

I am especially frustrated because I get absolutely no sympathy from anyone. Everyone at my school says that I should be thankful that I am getting 1st rounds, but getting a lot of 1st rounds means nothing if I can't get into the 2nd round. for those who have been successful in this market (gotten 2nd rounds or even that offer), PLEASE GIVE ME SOME INSIGHT. What am I doing wrong? OR rather, WHAT MORE CAN I DO? This week is pretty much the last week of on-campus interviewing, so any advice soon would be great. thanks!

so around January - May, check back in with some firms to see if they're doing another recruiting cycle or have the resources to bring on one more hire or see if anyone dropped out.

is this really the last week of on campus recruiting? I remember the IBs came on campus first, and then the corporates arrived.

Have you applied online to as many places as you can? I'm sure they have job postings for 2009?

as far as the rejections go, bro the markets suck. collect business cards, keep in touch with them and wherever you are in the next 2-3 years, if the market has gotten better, you'll be in a good place to interview.

------------ I'm making it up as I go along.

well, obviously the market is playing a role in all this, but that doesn't mean I'm ready to just give up. if anyone has had some success, DESPITE the market, I'd like to hear your story. thanks.

oh and thanks for the good advice above. seems like we posted at the same time.

Same here. I've had 6 first rounds so far, but only 1 superday invitation. The superday is with a BB that's weathering the storm better than many other firms, so they're definitely hiring for the FT class. The other first rounds were all with boutiques (both top and otherwise), and my guess is that they are looking to scoop up experienced hires on the cheap. The BB's that are still hiring in this market, on the other hand, have more structured programs and thus more linear recruiting efforts.

I go to a crappy school, I also have a pretty weak GPA (3.3). I am relying on my contacts to help me get interviews but they can only get you to a certain level. So far I have 1 verbal offer (but havent touched base with them in 2 months) 1 rejection after first round and I have 2 more interviews lined up. This was already incredibly tough job market, but with the fresh layoffs things are bound to get worse. I am hell bent on prop trading so my options are already pretty limited.

This is just something that we are all going through and its tough. My mind will not be at ease until I have something in writing. Exhaust your existing network of contacts is my best advice. Good luck.
