Capital Markets Analyst trying to break into Trading

Hi Monkeys,

I was fortunate enough to secure a capital markets spot at a BB after graduating college. However, I've come to dislike the work I do and especially the people I work with. I've been trying to break into trading for a over a year now but I'm getting passed up by people younger (I'm about 2 years in) and whenever I ask for feedback from the desks they always say I'm well prepared but they decided to go a different route. It feels like there's always someone who has leg up. I don't know how much longer I want to stay in my current team since it makes me miserable and I'm thinking to just leave the industry altogether instead of waiting around for a trading position. Any advice is appreciated.

Hey Rushmore833, I'm here because nobody responded to this thread after a few days...maybe one of these resources will help you:

Given you especially dislike the people you work with, would you at all consider working in Capital Markets at another BB?

Also interested to hear why you are interested in getting into trading vs. Capital Markets.

One thing to consider is looking at some analysts with backgrounds that don't consist of graduating and going straight into S&T - i.e., people who came from your background, or ops, etc. You should be able to find them on LinkedIn. Then reach out and get their advice. They may be able to alert you to a pipeline you wouldn't otherwise be aware of, or show you in the direction of a Director / MD who may be more willing to hire outside of traditional backgrounds.

I don't think I would consider moving to Capital Markets at another BB since I don't really enjoy the banking-type work flows. I'm mostly interested into getting into trading because I don't enjoy making PowerPoints all-day and I want to be closer to markets since that's really where my interest in Finance lies. I thought a capital markets role would help me understand if I wanted to do a more banking-focused route or be closer to markets and I'm certain I want to be working more on the markets-side of the business rather than the banking side.

Just to make sure. When you say capital markets you mean ECM?

It should be easier to move from capital markets to trading than the other way around. Weird that you keep getting passed up especially with 2 years under your belt. I agree with the above poster, reach out to people on LinkedIn and see what input they may have. Dont be afraid to just go to a different bank as well

When I say capital markets I mean DCM. I thought it would give me some advantage but that hasn't been the case. I'll definitely keep in mind what the above poster said about reaching out to people on LinkedIn. The issue with going to a different bank is that there aren't many positions open, I don't have an issue with leaving my current bank.
