Classmate dropping out of Med School citing "horrifying future salary potential" after running figures on Excel

A former class mate is looking to break into finance and will drop out of Columbia med school this month after much rumination, "running some figures on Excel", screenshotting and pasting said Excel calculation onto Facebook, and realizing that ASSUMING he makes $300k as a surgeon: Deducting heavy taxes, medical insurance (that could upwards of $10,000/month), bad work hours, $250k in med school debt and other living expense debt accumulated from age 22 thru age 28, and being stuck in hell for the next 8 years.

Now he wants to go into finance and get his physics phd. He graduated in May and has only been a med student a 2 months. I guess med school is no longer the conservative strategy for an upper middle class living huh.

People of WSO, your egos may feel better now. At least knowing Excel ain't so bad now!

Your friend is an idiot
Completely agree. As his friend, you should talk him out of being an idiot.

If this was during his undergrad that he came to this realization, that'd be one thing. Unless he's about to fail out, though, I will have never seen someone dumb enough to beast college and their MCAT, get into one of the top programs in the world and just quit to go into a profession with far less stability, far worse hours, less excitement and not nearly the same positive, life-saving work as medicine offers.

It's just not worth it. Tell him to suck it up and realize what's ultimately at the end of the tunnel is the best thing there. Also tell him that people at BBs (including myself) wouldn't even want to hire him if he displayed this lack of commitment to what he set out to do. Everyone would question his motivation, and he'd probably end up at some crappy MM shop with shit exit opps. anyway.

Yeah...plastic surgery is where it's at (for now...)

He really should rethink what he's doing. Making this kind of major decision this quickly doesn't seem right...he needs to really reconsider what he really wants to do before moving forward.

He's in Med School at Columbia! There are very few ways to ensure making a good wage better than to go to a quality med school
