Cold emailing former employees for recruitment process/interview advice?

Need some good advice here.

I have a telephone interview lined up for a boutique and to mitigate the risk of screwing up, I saw a few past intern employees at the firm on LinkedIn. Would it be appropriate to shoot a cold email to them asking about their experiences and interview process? If so, how would I approach them without coming off too stalkerish or awkward? Especially since I have no idea whether he might have friends/be in contact with the current employees, it is a small boutique after all.

As long as you aren't a complete tool I wouldn't see this as a negative. Due diligence is a good skill to have/show anyhow. I would be straight up with the people you contact too. "I have an interview with _____, noticed you were previously hired by them, and I'm looking for advice."

If they're still friends with someone in the company I think it's far more likely that they'd say "hey this kid seems really interested" to their friend rather than "lulz listen to what this loser sent me." Again though, it depends on what you send them and how you come across.

I would assume what CRE stated above to be pretty true. What about cold emailing an alumnus from my school (same major too - don't know him personally though) currently at a firm you have an upcoming interview at? Better/worse than cold emailing former interns/employees?

REValuation:
Are there any senior level guys on here that have received random Linkedin messages like this, that could provide some insight? Is this considered unprofessional or resourceful/eager?

I'm betting it's person to person. Just off the top of my head, I bet I get 1/3 to reply. I always guess that 1/3 don't actually check their linkedin and 1/3 think I'm annoying or just don't want to bother.

Making that all up of course, but really the 1/3 I/you get to reply is all that matters.
