Commercial Banking forum

Commercial banker here. I would love a commercial banking forum on WSO. There are a lot of intermixed comments on CB in the other forums because they don't have a home for them. I saw a thread topic from 2012 on the idea of starting a CB forum but it didn't get traction. What do you guys think? Are there enough CB'ers here to make it happen?

I think it's a good idea. I work in a mix of commercial and real estate banking, so it'd be nice to be able to connect and learn from others in a similar field.

In my (limited) experience, there's a pretty well traveled career path. There are 2 sides to CB, credit and sales. Some banks allow more switching than others. If you go into CB at a BB, you'll likely start off as a credit analyst, progress for 2-3 years until you become a portfolio manager. If you want to go the sales route, let it be known early. Instead of the PM position, you'll go into a relationship manager track.

CA - starting 65-70k/year in low COL area. small signing bonus. 8-15% year end bonus

PM- starting 90-110k in low COL area (no data on bonuses)

RM- starting 100-120k in low COL area (no data on bonuses)

Hope that helps with your decision making.

I support this - but let’s call it the ‘lending’ forum, or the ‘commercial lending’ forum.

It can encompass everything from direct lending, to CRE lending, and more traditional commercial banking (small business, middle market, corporate banking, etc).

After all, it’s not uncommon for different types of lenders to jump across product/niche types. You might have a MM commercial credit analyst at a regional bank go to a direct lending shop, or a CRE bank lender jump to a CRE debt fund.

My background is in FIG IB, but I’m now on the debt side. I’d love to see this on WSO.

I think the PE forum is more about recruiting for PE and generally life on the principal side, versus anything particularly debt focused. The IB forum is also probably the wrong place for commercial bankers to peruse, as there’s just a different mindset there.
