Conflict of interest - can I introduce a friend's company to my client
I'm in a large consulting firm and have lots of clients. A personal friend of mine recently approached me asking if I can introduce his company to one of my clients, to see if his company could provide some services to the client's company.
My friend's company is perfectly legit and I don't see why not. But are there potential conflict of interest or other pitfalls I need to be aware of?
Thanks a lot,
Discuss with management. At a junior level not worth the career risk. Note, no one likes change .... so you may have to sell your point hard.
Thanks! By selling the point hard you mean persuading my manager, or persuading my client?
Thanks!
Persuading management (who I almost guarantee will be defensive about it).
The fact you're asking about it makes it seem like you're not certain it is the right thing to do, so why would you? Also, that he asked makes it look like you've shared your client name with your friend, which I know in my firm is frowned upon. So in a way you'd also be admitting to breaking that confidentiality if you bring this up with management.
I'd tell my friend to approach them himself, no reason he can't cold call or e-mail someone in the company to setup a meeting.
